I would say it depends on your level. From 1/2-3/6 I would move as soon as your bankroll meets the requirements. The play is fundementally the same. As long as you can handle the swings at the new level emotionally your fine.
I had alot of trouble going from 3/6 to 5/10. I think it requires a larger bankroll, maybe 500BB. If you really want to see if your crushing a level before you leave it I would play at least 10K hands and see if your BB/100 is 2-3 or higher. It is probably a good indication you have outgrown that level. |

Just make sure your ready for the swings initially, can be crushing to the ego and bankroll.

If you move up in levels and you're not fairing well, when will do you decide to jump back down?

$5000 to play $5/10 seems a little extreme, but I know where you're coming from - the swings at that level are ridiculous, as you've previously reported.
I agree that it takes a lot of hands to see where you're at. 2-3 good nights at any limit can inflate one's ego beyond the point of reality.
