matusow called because he didnt put raymer on a flushdraw; he put him on AJ, AQ, or AK, which didnt hit the flop. i dont think it qualifies as a matusow blowup, because he had the best hand, and his read was correct except the fact that raymer was on a flushdraw. if you knew that your opponent just had overcards there, theres no reason not to call. it was a very tough, and very good call. matusow did let his ego make that call, because he wanted to bust raymer so badly, but i still believe that he made a great call.
as for raymer, i dont dislike him because he won a bunch of coinflips, i dislike his glasses, and how he handled his confrontation with matusow. matusow was being a bully, and raymer should have stood up for himself.... i think thats why i dont like him. -jB |

Actually...when you put your opponent on overcards like AJ or AQ, there is NOTHING at all ruling out that those two cards are suited and give him overcards+flushdraw, which makes this situation very sticky.

I hate to go this direction, but WTF are you talking about???? He handled himself like a gentlemen and had enough respect for the other players in the room to not cause a scene. I don't think it was out of the question that Matusow got a penalty for talking the way he did. I am not sure if it was a floor or a tournament director but you can hear in the background that someone warned him during that little outburst that he could talk about himself all he wanted but not to insult the other players. Matusow is/was/will always be a no class jerk-off with average poker skills and ZERO life skills, and will probably end up in jail, OOPS forgot currently serving time.
How did you want Raymer to react, stand up push over the table and belt him one, OH that would have been classy. You are way off base on this one.

Thanks for posting that. So I didn't have to.
The "young breed" of poker players may talk shit and try to wage a verbal war, but that's just stupid. Playing 1/2 on the internet, bullshit away, but not in the most prestigous tourney in the world. Raymer did what I would've done, sat quietly and waited for a chance to bust him out. Which he did. Actions and results speak louder than words. Matusow stinks, sorry. He made the call when he was ahead in the hand, but TP said it best. "He put in his chips as a slight favorite," which is something I've been avoiding doing lately. In fact, I hate going all-in and I think a lot of people make the mistake of doing that when they have chips. A big bet will suffice in these situations, not an all-in. |

But it's worse than that... He CALLED his chips all in. This is a terrible play when you *think* you are a slight favorite, IMO...
As for their previous confrontation... *I* would have talked back to Matusow. But I think that is the wrong thing to do, and I respect Raymer for doing the right thing and keeping quiet. |

i dont think he shoud have hit matusow, but he could have done something besides sit there and just take it. theres thousands of things he could have just said to make mike shut up, without being an asshole.

He took his chips thats all the talking he needed to do. Why say anything when the shit talking pratt makes himself look bad with his carrying on tactics. I would have done the same thing, sit back and keep it all inside.

I couldnt agree more with Penguin. Just let Mike the Mouth try to push him around and bide your time. Raymer is someone with a brain, not a mouth. Anyone can rant and rave and swear (ask me, I'm good at it, lol), but it takes someone with character to sit back and let it play to your advantage. Raymer just let Mike be Mike. Remember Raymer isnt just another internet newbie. He's been playing for awhile now. In B&M's (foxwoods mostly) and in WSOP, as well as online.
And, he did give it back to Mike rather nicely, just nonchalantly. After Mike talked his chit, Raymer calmly said "thanks for busting me Mike". That hurst more than any taunting, swearing whatever you can do. |

Hey guys,
Well, I think Raymer's awesome. I watched the tournament live on PS, saw his pic, and saw all the plays he made (many of which I wasn't too pleased with), and imediately didn't like him. Then the WSOP eps came on, and my opinion of him changed sooooooo fast. He's very polite, humble, gracious, and doesn't sound like an unintelligent jerk (seems to be all too common in poker players). Cheers, Gutzz |

Penguinfan adressed your nonsense in the other paragraph, so I'll address this one. Again, I think you are way off base. Matusow DID put Raymer on he flush draw with overcards (at least I think he did - when he cards were turned over he said he knew that's what he had). Yes, he had the best hand right then, but certainly not much much.... It wasn't much ore than a coinflip. And he CALLED all his chips in. This is a bad call, if you ask me. Plain and simple. He had plenty of chips and time to wait for a better situation to CALL his money in (this is so much diferent than if he had pushed in first, of course).
You say there's no reason not to make that call.... How's this for a reason: Nearly half the time you make that call, your tournament will be over. Done. End of WSOP. Yeah, I think that's a pretty good reson. |

from what he said after the hand, he just knew that raymer had overcards. he never would have made that call if he had put raymer on suited overcards, because raymer would be a favorite over him.
