I started at $100, and have gone to over 7K in 1.5 years, very nice investment considering I would be doing jack shit otherwise.
Oh, and look, Swa was here today. We have a sighting.

Ok, My buddy who is not anything like me so should not be called a SWA, just moved his money around sites.. uses it to pay bills, etc..
Also, I am not all that impressed by any of the "amazing" numbers people have thrown out. I mean 7K in 1.5 years.. umm.. is that impressive? Assuming you only played 5 hours a week thats like $19hr, fucking make more working at McDonalds. Don't get me wrong. It is a good accomplishment, glad you could do it, it means something. It is a nice hobby. However, I would not consider it wildly successful. The guys who impress me make that and more every month. I am obviously not one of those guys but something along the lines of a few thousand a month would be a worthy goal I think.. I get the sense TP makes decent money playing and maybe a few others.. but the majority of people seem to not.

what mcdonalds you know that pays $19 HR. Its impressive because it shows constant winning not just a big hit. Anyone can go on a run and make 2k in a couple days hell if I did it anyone can. Im more impressed by the 7k in a year and a half then any 2k in a couple days. |

I am not really impressed by either. Yes, the 7K in 1.5 years shows the dedication and patients you need to grow a roll. That does MEAN something and I do not mean to belittle it. However, it doesnt turn me on at all. Obviously 2K in a week could be luck. If you do it over and over its more likely skill. Of course when I can do a few grand a month consistantly then I can talk smack. lol.

I agree Sir but just like me you have been down this road before and lost it. Why not try to keep it this time and not throw it away? Im not getting this I learned my lesson the 1st time and im not even remotely concidering playing 10/20 or whatever you are concidering playing. I know online its hard to think of the money as really yours but think about it man you might throw away over 1k dollars you know what you could do with that? Not trying to preach or anything even though it sounds like I'am just dont want to see a post from you in a couple days saying "I hate poker". |

I am only risking 5 bucks. Ok, 300 bucks of winnings, but -5 in the bankroll. Oh yeah, and read my TP blurb! I HATE POKER! lol.

I am impressed. Sir, you and I go way back - in Internet years anyway - but it seems like what you're saying is that if you can't win big, you don't want to win at all.
I'm more of the keep winning over the longer term, slowly growing the bankroll, and slowly moving up in limits. Hell, if it takes 5 years to regularly beat the $200 NL games, then I'll happily take five years to do it. It's taken me about 6 months to comfortably beat the $25 NL games, and then the $50 NL games. Now that I'm playing the $100 NL games, I have no desire to move up too quickly, just to book bigger wins. I'm quite content to take my snail's pace in moving up. Just some thoughts. |

Yep, that's exactly the path I'm on too. Just wish I could get the MTT bug out of my system since I've only baby-cashed once in about the last 15 I've played.

Good points. I agree. I have a similar mindset. I couldnt/cant justify using family money to play. I started with free $10 from prima, $20 from Pacific, and $25 from TP, and grinded out a meager bankroll (~$1000). This summer has been crazy, and I cashed about half out and havent played much. Just starting to gear up for alot of playing and bonus whoring. I will continue to build the bankroll, and cash out a bit here and there (as well as profit from 2 small weekly tournaments). I am dedicated to improving, reading books, expanding my game to more NL ring, PLo8, etc.
I think it all comes back to 'why do you play poker'? For the fun and gamble of it, trying to make a big score here and there, nothing wrong with that. Just to have fun and play live with the boys, great. Me, I want to be one of those who comfortably make 40K-100K a year playing online. It seems there are alot of them. If you put in the hours, bonus whore out the wazzoo, practice good game selction and bankroll management, it doesnt really seem that the risk is even all that great. I plan to be home full time, playing online, and taking care of our new baby GIRL (we just found out today) come springtime. I dont think it is all that lofty of a goal. I think it is modestly simple to do. What do you all think? Good discussions boys...keep it up!! |

Try betting it all on "red".
Then if it hits, let it ride. I believe this would satisfy the urges for a quick and easy score, and probably give you better odds then what you are proposing to do...

I haven't been involved too much in this thread (nor do I want to be), but I just get the impression Sir is trying too hard to "nonchalantly disregard money." Maybe that doesn't make sense to some of you, but I'm sure there are a select few who know exactly what I'm talking about.
I personally don't think you (directed to Sir) make the kind of money you're alluding to. Of course, I'm just speculating, but we've talked too often on AIM, and that's just my impression. Feel free to scan and post your last W2 (redacting the contact information) to prove me wrong. I hope you realize your plan is stupid, and it's incredibly detrimental to your progress as a poker player. You are completely results oriented, and when you play outside of your bankroll limits, you're simply creating a recipe for disaster. But you've been there before. Two or three times. "You play to win the game." The only way you're going to do that is by making correct decisions. Fuck results.

I do make decent money playing online - when I play enough. Most of the time, for one reason or another, I simply don't get the hands in that I would like to.
