not saying he has $400 in reserve to play with. Ok lets put it this way a guy has a decent job and gets paid and sees hey I got a extra $400 I can put online. Ok so he does that now he has no extra money after this to play with but knows that he can deposit in 2 weeks if he has to. So he has $400 and only $400 to play with for 2 weeks, is it a sin to put $100 of that in 2/4?

Yes, and he will go straight to hell for it.

Of course not. He can play 100/200 if he wants (assuming he can find a site that will let him sit with $400). It's just that the higher the limit he plays, the more likely he's going to bust.

Bankroll guidelines are for people that don't want to bust out. You pick a number and they give you a guideline of where you should be able to survive the short term fluctuations of poker. If you don't care about busting out, or reloading your bankroll, then bankroll guidelines don't apply to you. Obviously. Play anywhere you like.

thanks TP and BB,
thats kinda what I wanted to hear, just seems like so many people are stuck on this having the correct bankroll for a game no matter what. I just wanted to know if there are instances were that dosent apply. Playing poker in hell, that dosent sound too fun.

Default bankroll guideline

I think people confuse what the bankroll 'guideline' is (or maybe its me that gets confused). I look at it as someone saying "To ride out the fluxuations that one is inevitably going to encouter - one should have 300x the BB to account for that. This is true if you are a winning player".

But, i think this has been discussed repeatedly on here.

Bankroll = The amount you have to play poker. (I.E. I have $3,000 that I can afford to lose playing poker)

Buy-in = The amount you sit down with for a given session.

I don't know where my bankroll is right now, but let's just say it's more than double the min requirement for my level.

However, when I sit down, I buy-in for $150. Do you see the difference?

Seriously, we need a filter and anytime Brian uses the word "bankroll" the thread should be deleted.

I think you understand (finally, maybe) the fact that you need X amount of BBs to be "bankrolled' for a game. However, I'm not sure if you understand the reasoning behind it.

Maybe you do.

Just realize that you're on a poker forum. That leads me to assume (obviously incorrectly) that people here are serious about their game and are concerned with making decisions that are going to advance their poker "career."

I think people find your posts on this subject quite stupid and irritating because we just don't share the same views as you. People around here aren't depositing for entertainment value, they are trying to make money. I don't find losing money to be entertaining.

think you got the wrong Idea about the post shabi, Im not saying take youre whole roll and put it on a game to have fun. I'am saying taking a portion of youre current online roll and putting it a game you arnt bankrolled for to see how you do.

Its like when you played 5/10 for the 1st time you were not bankrolled for it but you wanted to see how the game was. Im saying the same thing taking $100 and putting it on 2/4 because you think you can beat the game if you dont then thats fine.

I don't see how it matters for that player. If they are having to redeposit every time they get paid, they aren't a very good player, or are being outplayed at the limit they are playing.

Even if they win, it really isn;'t a bankroll issue. They are just putting money into poker as entertainment and if they are happy if they blow through it in an hour, then that is fine.

If you are trying to build it up (either for money, or just for the challenge) then they should play within the bankroll to avoid going bust and "losing")
