Cool story, cool thread.
Other than the betting part of it, how was the round? Was the guy cool, or was it like spending 4 hours golfing with an online poker enemy? I can't think that would be too much fun. I don't have much hustling advice, but I don't see any problem at all with getting some over-confident guy onto a golf course and letting him give you his money. What you need to do though, IMO, is forget this small time stuff and go for the big hits. Try to find someone willing to play $100 a hole. Or $500 a hole. Be careful choosing your mark, of course.... but if you are a scratch golfer, you should be fine. Now... on to something much more important. I have a "prop" for you. You say you are a scratch golfer. I promise you that I am not - not even close. In fact, I don't think I have played a round in more than a year now (it's cloe though - I played last summer). So, given all that, I'm willing to make you a friendly wager. Give me 50 strokes (yes, 50), and I'll take you on using only a putter. I know, I know... 50 strokes sounds like a lot. That's about 3 per hole. Did I mention I will only be using a putter? Whadday say? |

LOL. Defendant replies... How much you wanna bet, Mr. WSOP? This oddly reminds me of Tin Cup.
Anyone wanna play some Chess for money?

I'll bet any reasonable, yet still friendly amount.
Fine print: 1. If you allow me to bring 2 putters (one for putting - one for everything else), I will agree to not practice even a single put-drive until game day. Also, if I break a putter, I'd like to be able to replace it with another. 2. We need to mutually agree on the course. I can't risk ending up on some crazy water course with island greens, etc. Even if there is just one sick island green type of hole, it would be sporting of you to give me a max stroke limit.... say 12 or something like that. I'd hate to play 17 great holes and then shoot a 35 on some stupid island green. P.S. Tin Cup used a 7 iron. Pussy. |

Haha...well, it would be fun wouldnt it :P The problem would be meeting up, Florida and Arkansas are a little ways apart.
Can we choose a course with lots of island greens? ![]() Anyways, how about this one (I wont lie to ya, its my home course, but its an easy enough course) As far as the round goes, it was pleasant enough, a little tense cause the guy started getting frustrated, but nothing too bad. I have no business here but this is my favorite thread ever!
Chip, your reply was fucking brilliant, yet succinct. TP, that first post is probably your best ever outside of the WSOP shit. LMAO!!!!! I'm printing this thread and putting it up in my office.

Something tells me this is not the first time TP has made this particular offer. But how far can you drive with a putter? If this comes to pass, I'd be up for some side action.

Actually, putter drives arent too shabby. The part thats REALLY tough is approach shots, no way to get a high trajectory, spinning shot.

Yes, I imagine that would be tricky. Then again, if you play golf at my level, you're not so much worried about "spinning shots" anyway. So, are we on? What are the stakes? I wonder if there is a way we could play on 2 mutually agreed upon courses, with some sort of forum witness joining each of us. Hell, I'd trust your word on your score (it's going to be +/-5 of scratch). It's my unpredictable round we'd need to have witnessed...

That actually sounds like a plan. As far as wager goes, I wouldnt go over $100 just cause my gambling bankroll isnt overly huge (unlike Mr WSOP here hehe). Not sure if youd consider this worth your time, but my suggestion would be $50, counter suggestions welcome.
As far as courses go, basically, this area has a TON of courses, from real easy to brutally hard. Basically, Id say you suggest one and give me the specifications (yardage, slope rating, course handicap), and I can find one to match it (hardest course in the area is slope 131, so dont go much tougher than that). As far as your course goes, well, the slope/course ratings might not mean so much as how many times do you have to hit over water, how high is greenside rough, amount of greenside bunkers, elevated greens or not etc, because your shots SHOULD be reasonably straight (no grooves on a putter, so less side spin on a bad swing), so little trouble on the right/left ![]() Not sure about a forum member in the area, but I can definitely have someone witness my round and sign off on the scorecard if youd trust that. Oh by the way..by "putter" were talking 6 degrees loft or less, correct? :P My GUESS is youre planning on using a belly putter to drive with but what do I know hehe. If this goes down, there's a chance I could be the witness for Mr. World Series.

It's not about the money. It's about the beauty of the bet. I've made hundreds if not thousands of $1 bets in my lifetime. It's nto about the money. It's about seeing if that guy really will lick that dead rat or drink that entire jar of salsa (answers: no, yes).
So, $50 is fine. I'd say we could go lower, but I'd like to at least have my round payed for I'm fine with you using whatever witness you like. I'll trust you. It's not like you're going to be turning in some 65 round or something (I hope), so it shouldn't matter anyway. I think I can break 120, which is why I came up with the 50 stroke thing. Oh, and I'm talking standard putters here - not even those really tall ones or one of the ones with a huge head. I will happily take photos for you if you like. I have my putting putter already, but I'll go spend $10 on some cheapo one for my driving. I fully expect it to break, hence me wanting to be able to use 2 (or 3 if necessary). I'd love for pshabi to come up for a round. If he can't make it though, I obviously can provide my own witness. You'd have to trust me/us though. I'm an honest guy and I don't cheat. As for the course, I'll look around and see what I can find. There is a nice little Executive course not too far from here that I've always wanted to play. hehe... Yeah, I didn't think so. This course is my favorite around here: There are a couple of holes that would be problematic for me though, but I'll deal with it. A cheaper alternative might be to go with one of the municipal courses. I've played here once: Never played here: |

A man after my own heart. Ive been meaning to do this with frineds but no one has had the balls/spare money to make an evening of walking around with like 50 dollars in ones and make stupid bets. From the moment I saw Rat Race I knew I had a knack for it...heh, whatever. Anyhoo, anyone can come through Atlanta and its on! Oh, and if I ever meet anyone from this forum in the future remind me and we will definately do this.
Oh, and Aeq, I am up for chess for money. Not much though, Im not great with respect to someone who puts money on chess but i can handle the average joe with no problem. I cant do timed chess, I need to take my time. But I am up for it, something on yahoo and then a transfer on stars or something. lemme know

I'd be quite happy to make a bet on this too (I love betting on stupid shit, in case you couldn't tell). How far do you think I can drive a ball with a putter? How about if I bet you that I can drive at least 8 out of 10 balls farther than 100 yards?
As for me running this hustle - er..... I mean.... "taking part in this challenge" in the past: No comment
