Ah, this is why I don't particularly like playing NL online. Couple of hands like that and your bankroll is crippled.

Impossible to read your opponent because, obviously, you can't see him. I'm sure NL is bigtime profitable, but I am just not ready to handle that kind of bankroll fluctuation.

Default I think you have to fold

That hurts, but unless prior evidence shows the guy to be some kind of maniac, you have to give him credit for having hit a set. Occasionally you are going to get bluffed/bullied out of a pot that should have been yours, but it is much more costly to make the wrong call here. Sounds like more aggressive on the turn would have been the way go to.

I may be completely wrong here, so I'll ASK instead offering this as advice. If he knew he had you beat with a set (or maybe top two pair) wouldn't he have made a smaller raise that you would have been willing to call. If he put you on TPTK (or even two pair) and held a set, smooth call down to river and then make a raise that will get called. This raise made it wrong for a call. A pot sized bet somewhere in there might have forced a re-raise that would have told you you were beat earlier in the hand.

Not sure what limit we are talking (or position for that matter).

That said, I think laying it down would be the play here unless you have a read that makes you confident you have the best hand (which you said you didn't).

with only top pair, top kicker, you are probably in trouble here. that huge raise at that point in the hand just screams strength to me.

the other guy probably made a mistake by raising that much, as he likely would have maximized his profit by raising a much smaller amount. it does seem like he slowplayed a set though.
