In rebuy tournies, do you immediately rebuy at the start?

Agree totally...
However.... Try this....
As soon as you take your seat and before the tourney starts...
Re-Buy.... No nead to play first hand for a bet.
Read the fine print.
Re-buys allowed at 1500 chips or less.
Therefore re-buy immediately before starting the tourney.
Then re-buy twice if you are unfortunate enough to get knocked out.

I also find that in re-buys, I'll rebuy immediately and then push in when I get a premium chance. As long as I am up around 5-6K before the break, I tend to do just fine.
