Default A brief foray into limit holdem

Soooo, after a frustrating week or two and trying to clear bonuses faster, I thought I would give limit a go again. I don't want to bash it without giving it a try. Well, after chopping my bankroll in half since sometime last week. I have decided I am done for good (or until i get bored like this again). I think i really need to read up on limit or something because I just am not getting the hang of it. Oh well, i feel so comfortable back at the NL tables.

What game are you playing? 6 max? Full table? What limits? Do you have Poker Tracker stats you want to share? Maybe we could give you some idea of where you're going wrong (too loose, too tight, no aggressive enough,etc)...

How many hands are we talking about here anyway?

Well I have no poker tracker, but maybe I have played 1k hands??? 6 max, 2/4 (above my roll, but the only one that clears the bonus effectively.) I wasn't playing good poker by any means. I am surprised at how much my mindset needs to be adjusted for limit or NL, i dont know how you switch back and forth TP. I cant be helped at the moment, Im running back to NL.

Everyone can be helped.... especially when they are moving to 6 max limit.

Poker Tracker would be a good start.

Here's a basic 6-max pre-flop guide that I wrote for my friend:

AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs – always raise, 3-bet, cap
AKo, AQ, KQs, AJs, TT, 99 – raise, 3-bet, don’t cap but call if it gets capped
88, 77, AJo, ATs, KQo, KJs, QJs – raise if limpers or if nobody has entered the pot, fold if pot has been raised before you
66, 55, ATo, KJo, QJo, KTs, JTs, QTs, -- raise if nobody is in pot, call if limping before you
44, 33, 22, KTo, QTo, JTo, T9s, AXs, -- call if limping before you, otherwise fold

Well I know it's early, but I'm already up $20 at 1/2 limit on Titan going by this, so thanks.

Sidenote: I'm raising limpers with ATo, KJo and K10s as well.

I'll chuck KTo and QJo preflop if there are limpers usually. I don't think they have enough value. I'll limp after others with j10.

This is consistent with another chart that I have. It's an excel file, not really sure if I can post it, but if you PM me your email addy (not just sjay, but anybody) I'll be happy to attach it and send it to you.

Bah, now if only I had a chart to help me avoid crazy suckouts. Turning Broadway, only to get flushed by 82s on the river?

I'm a bit more aggressive than both of you, I think. But quite honestly, I'm not sure that's better. I think I like tossing KT and QJ after a limp... usually I raise with those.

I open raise them for sure.

But, I just don't like the way they play multiway.

I used to raise those too.

Default Seems Tight..

Seems WAYYY tight, but thats not a bad thing necessarily. So if I raise in with my JTd and I get re-raised do I then call no matter what since I have already committed the two bucks or do I fold?

You call, of course. In limit, if you put 2 bets in, typically, you're not going to fold if someone wants you to put in one more.

In fact, in a big multiway pot, I'd cap with a nice drawing hand like this.

Default One other thing..

Do you really like 3-betting TT and 99. In some of these low limit games your gonna get a call for 3-4 bets with A2o and shit like that. Actually you might get 3-4 callers on average. Even at 6-Max. It is crazy ass! I think that weakens lower pairs in my mind.

I'll take my 99 or TT against A2o any day of the week. Ram it and jam it!

Naturally, if the flop brings and Ace, you can't keep ramming and jamming, but preflop, absolutely...

Fair enough.... but believe me when I tell you the solution isn't to stop raising, just in case they suck out. All that's going to do it encourage them to suck out.

Default Honest Question

I mean it when I say those low 99-TT cards are devalued when 6 people call every flop. I mean how can you bet or call a flop with a AKQJT on it with 99? Are you looking to hit the set? I see you folding almost every flop with 99 or TT.

Even if you dodge the first bullet you have 2 more cards coming, and anyone with overs in the pot.
