Am I missing something?
Played a bit at lunch and in the $10 WSOP satty at UB I had AQ in late position, 2 limpers so I make it 6xBB to go, all fold except the first limper. Flops comes 75Q rainbow, I bet the pot, he calls, turn card's a 2, I've got him covered and put him all-in, he calls and flips over Q2o... so this guy calls a big preflop raise and pot size bet after the flop with Q2o?? Anyway, I said something in the chat like, "monster hand." Then one of the other players who wasn't even in the hand starts giving me shit about how I got played. So we went back and forth with me saying that if you're gonna call raises with that kind of junk you'll do nothing but bust out. He shot back about how you have to play those kind of hands to crack big PPs and hands like AK and AQ. Then he started in w/crap about burning my poker books, let's go play heads-up, blah, blah, blah. This guy went on to finish 2nd in the tourney (thankfully only 1st got the seat), and I tracked him down on UltimateBuddy and saw him sitting at some pretty high tables (well, compared to where I play... $2/$4 Limit vs. my $50 or $100 NL) and had quite a bit of money and looked to be doing well.
So, my question is... am I missing something? I just don't see how it makes any sense calling big preflop raises with a hand like Q2o. Maybe with higher end suited connectors, but not that kind of junk. I'm admittedly a very tight player, but I just fail to see the logic in calling raises with rags in the hopes that you'll get lucky and hit a hand that's easily masked. How could it possibly be profitable to risk most of your stack on a 3-outer? Or is this something you do in a tournament in hopes of amassing a big stick of chips early on?? Am I playing too tight in tourneys? Is this how those guys that have massive amounts of chips at the first break do it? Seems to me that maybe every once in a while you'd amass a bunch of chips when you got lucky but that much more often than not you'd be out of tourneys in a hurry. So, opinions?

I like to play marginal hands early in a tournament as long as it's cheap to see a flop. Q2 by the way is not marginal, it's shit. Assuming Q2 is one of the marginal hands I like to play, 6x BB pre flop raise is too much for me to call. Insta fold. The flop call by him is absolutely horrible as well. He is behind to any Q you might be holding. He just got lucky as hell. There are so many Gus Hansen wannabes out there that they think the way he plays will be succesful for them as well. First of all, TV poker is heavily edited. Secondly, Gus is great POST flop player. He can get off hands when need be. Not many players have the discipline or skill to play that way.

There is....BUT:
1) Not Q2os 2) Only if you have a comfortable number of chips in a tourney 3) Yeah, he was just being an ass

Its seems to me that over the past 6 months in many online games with small buyins (upto $50)we now have a mass of players who are playing on instinct (gut feeling).
If the tournaments are re-buys, well then throw away any poker knowledge you have until well into the game. Poker is now the most played game in the world and because of the possibilities of perhaps winning millions in what the press and media are saying is a very easy game and life, there has been a huge influx from what I can only call CHANCERS. These people now turn up at sites deposit a $1000 or so and then play the game relying on luck. Unfortunatley some seem to winning and winning lots, but can it last. Ive a feeling it cannot continue. I have a story to tell which is totally true and one that in a way did not shock me when I was told. Around 3 years ago I started playing online poker, I fell in love with the game and tried to win hands/tournaments using luck, I then got my first pokerbooks and started learning the game. I remember the first time I ever won a tourny online it was on PS and $10 stud 950 players. I put into place all I read in the books, things like being patient, being agressive and knowing when to throw away. The feeling was fantastic and yet I still made a deal when down to 2 even though I was many 1000s chips ahead. Going into work and telling my friends I had won after many months of getting stick and ridicule from them was a great relieve for me and I actually knew then that if I stuck to my poker principiles and use what knowledge I was learning I could do well at poker. One person I knew was offered £5000 on a credit card, he used this £5000 ($7600) to play poker he would play any games and any cards, He would tell me what he was winning and some nights he was winning $1000 an hour. I got to know his screenmame and would silently watch this guy, he had no skill or knowledge of poker, he would make bets that either struck him out or earned him lots. About a year ago I was told by another frien of mine that this guy had gone bankrupt and he had been told that he had spent £20000 on poker. Now because of a huge change in British Law, people now can declair themselfs bankrupt and have all there debts cleared and all for £200. Owing nothing to creditors, Now thats not a problem but what is that you will only be bankrupt for 1 year at the most, so after your year or in many cases shorter you can then start all over again. This has led to thousands of players taking a risk and with little respect to either other players or money. Now this cannot continue and in England they are looking into what has been a huge mistake in law and opended the door to many younger players taking risks. I remember sitting at tournament tbls with THE BEAT - KID BLAST ect and enjoying the game, now I sit on tbls with players called 4uku - and nobED, NEED I SAY MORE. THE DAY OF THE CHANCER IS HERE - BUT THEY WONT LAST Ps - On another note I know will be calling TP, by his real name Mark.

It's called the Law of Large Numbers. It's called short-term vs. long-term.
If you can wrap your head around statistics, probability, and expectation, then you will properly throw away Q2o in hopes of "busting" a big hand. |

He might have been a decent card player who was applying doyle's logic about commending people for bad play. Why wouldn't that guy want to the other player calling w/ Q2o? Commending people for stupid play, I've got to problem with it.
