Wish me luck!
I turned 21 a few weeks ago, and today I'm going to Foxwoods for the first time to play the $100 NLHE tourney that runs at 10am every friday.
Wish me luck! |

Too late for you to read this, but enjoy the donkfest and don't play too tight.

If only I had read this before going, I probably wouldve called the first hand with Q8 and wouldve flopped a set. (oops trips sorry TP!)
So card dead the whole time, 55, AJ, and KQ were the only hands I saw in over 2 hours. Made it to about 35th place out of 150 so not too bad, but no cash. Getting hit with a frozen deck is so frustrating. I missed my two opportunities early on. The one I mentioned earlier with the Q8 where I wouldve flopped a set. Another missed opportunity was in the first level, I had 89 and folded to a 200 raise. Flop came 2 9s, 8 on the turn. 4 clubs on the board too so I wouldve definitely gotten paid off. On the second to last hand I was in the BB with A8 for 1600 and 200 ante, I had about 4500 left behind. Middle position raises to cover my stack. I decided to fold figuring he has me dominated. Next hand im SB with Q6o. Everyone folded around to me so without really thinking too much I pushed all in, hoping I could get the blinds I just lost back and see a few more hands. BB called with A9 and ace high held up all the way. In retrospect, I probably shouldve called the A8 the hand before, which is really my only regret for the day. Other than that, I never saw a hand the whole time. I really learned a lot today, hopefully next time I go I can get some cards! If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! Three things:
1. You can't flop a set with Q8. You need a pair in your hand to flop a set. 2. You don't need to "see" any cards to win a tourney. . 3. Sounds like you played pretty well overall, but I agree, that A8 was probably a call. And the 98 may have been too, depending on stack sizes, blinds, etc. Overall though, welcome to world of live poker! |

It is exactly this type of tournament that Arnold Snyder's "The Poker Tournament Formula" will help with. I've played enough of these FW donkfests to realize that you can't sit around and wait for the dealer to deliver good hands. Once you get past the first couple of levels, you need to play aggro in position (CO and HJ more than the button) to have your stack keep pace with the rapid increase in blinds. Literally, I consider myself short stacked when my stack is less than 12 big blinds not for the level I'm on, but 2 levels down the road.
I was actually thinking about heading down there after work today to play in the 7 PM Act II super, but I'm still on the fence. I guess I'll decide when I get in the car to head home.

thanks for the advice, I will probably buy that book, I read about it on that site.
Also, how much are those Act I and Act II things, and how do they work? |

The Act I is a Single table SNG $65 entry fee. Top 2 finishers get an entry into the Act II Single table SNG. You can buy into the Act II SNG for $250. Top 2 there get in the Act III super MTT which has a $1100 (I think) buy-in. Top 10% in that get a seat in the WPF $10k ME. There are also Act II supers which cost $150. Top 10% get an Act III seat. There are also $1,080 ST SNG's winner gets the WPF seat.
