Pretend you're a winning poker player who primarily plays limit hold'em ring games. Say you make it your mission to win a WPT event. You have a decent-sized bankroll -- large enough to play 30/60, but not large enough to go buying into a bunch of 10K poker tournaments.

How would you improve your tournament skills to the point where you have a legitimate chance to win a WPT event?

Given the circumstances, I don't want to buy-into the tournament. It's way too expensive considering my bankroll, so my initial objective is to win a satellite.

After that (or, while I do that) I'll get practice in large tournaments. And that's about it.

Yeah what Lou said: Satellites are your best bet. Go for multis or singles, whatever floats your boat. Support your bankroll by playing as many online tournaments as you can (SnGs and multis alike) to get more practice. A trip to a few low buyin B&M tourneys would also be in order, if you just HAPPEN to have to make a business trip to Vegas

i think to be able to play in any of the wpt caliber events, then you have to get some experience in tournaments first. as a winning player at 30/60 you probably have a good shot at doing well in tourneys, but without some practice you would really just be flushing money away.

playing online would be my best advice. play the pokerstars big sunday tourneys, or something like that. even work up to there if you want to start smaller. assuming that you have around 20k for a poker bankroll (a little bit over 300 bb), i would try to qualify online for wpt events as well, taking advantage of small buy in super satellites. you dont have close to enough to just plunk down the money right there, so take advantage of the opportunities at low buy in qualifiers online.

in addition, it doesnt hurt to just keep grinding it out at 30/60 in order to make the next jump in stakes.

playing the 350K and the 500K on stars will give you great practice since the best online pro players and best pro players like Gavin Griffin, Fischman, Jungblut, Wolfe, and Josh Arieh play those tournies so your'll be getting practice against the best.
