Default Home Game Tourney of Champions... Good or Bad idea?

I host a weekly home SNG. $20 buy-in. 2nd place gets entry back, winner takes rest.

We've got a core of 5 player and usually 1 or 2 others guys to round out a field of 6 or 7.

If you played at the game, what would you think of this idea.

Take $10 out of the pot every week, and put it to the side. In December, anyone who has won this SNG throughout the year would be eligible to participate in a freeroll for the money that was pulled out of the weekly pot.

If you did it all year long you'd have a nice $500 freeroll at the end of the year.

If you played at a similar game would you like this idea? Why or why not? Just something I'm tossing around to give some added flair to the whole thing.

that would sound like a fun idea... gives you even more reason to win as if you needed anymore reasons.

Sounds like it'd end up being your 5 regular guys and a couple others which wouldn't be that much different from your weekly game. (seriously, everyone is probably going to win at least once from here to december.. maybe you should make the requirements three wins or something) but the idea of setting aside a certain amount each week to have a freeroll at the end of the year is pretty cool.

Sounds like a good idea...probably the same guys, but the pot would be bigger... Go for it.

Yeah, I know it will probably be just the 5 of us, but I liked the idea mroe for the Big Game aspect at the end.

The outside 1 or 2 players NEVER WIN.

Instead of a $500 freeroll, make the final tourney of the year like a $50 buyin with the $500 added to the prizepool (assuming everyone wins once and gets to play)

there would be about $380 x average # of players in the December prize pool. about 38 weeks @ $10 a head per tourney. (assuming you play all weeks)

6 x $380 = $2280 -- seems unnecessarily high for $20 weekly buyins, IMO

maybe just hold out $3 out of each tourney buyin?? That would be about $500 and there would be left in for the weekly tourneys.

[end gratuitous use of computer calculator]

I like the buyin final event (with money added) idea.

Maybe if you play in a certain number of weekly events you get a reduction in the buyin to the final, and if you win a certain number you get in free, thus rewarding consistantly good players.

Also, you could have a higher buyin for anyone who has not played in other events, but who want to play the final.

I would suggest you pay more spots in the final though since everyone will have tied up a bunch of money in it over the year. 4-5 maybe??

Sounds like a fun idea, where are you playing???

What I meant was take $10 out of the total prize pool, not $10 from each player.

So we'd actually have a $380 prize pool in December. That's huge money for our crowd.

I think it sounds like a cool idea.... Everyone is likely going to be in the freeroll, but it's probably easier for people to pay that money as you go instead of coughing it all up at once, so this is a great way to accomplish that.

If you think about it though, this set-up actually HURTS the best players in your game and helps the weakest. Figure even the weakest is going to win at least ONCE, so everyone is going to be in the freeroll. If that's true, that means the person who won the most times will have contributed the most to the freeroll money. the guy who won the least (say, once) will have only contributed $10.

Interesting.

We are doing something similar in our weekly NL tourney. We are basically having a POY race. We give points for finishes, and put up $1 extra each. At the end of the year we will split this up among top 3. 50%/30%/20%. Only thing is towards the end if someone has no chance, they may not be putting in the extra buck, but no big deal. This helps the consistent players a bit.

Default Good idea

I was in a regular home game for a couple of years and each week, on top of the buy-in, we put $5 in the "pickle jar" with a post it note paper clipped onto it with our names. Once the pickle jar reached $500 (usually 4-6 months), anyone who had a name in the jar would be invited to a large tournament to play for the money. Each $5 got you 100 chips. This prevented the "occasional" player from playing once and then winning the big tourney. The more you played at the weekly games, the more chips you started with. It worked well for the two years I was playing in the game.

Any jar will do. If you do use a pickle jar, make sure you do not clean the jar before putting the money in so for the few tourneys, the winnings have an authentic dill smell...
