Detrimental Reading

I just picked up Sklanky's Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players. While perusing the first couple chapters i read that it is intended mostly for mid-range limit hold'em.

I play neither of these: mid-range or limit.

Is reading this in anyway going to be a detriment to my NL game. And if so, what would be a good book for me to start with.

I don't think any poker reading can be detrimental... Just keep in mind the intended audience.

You should read the Harrington on Hold'Em books (NL Tourney strategy). They are gold.

Exactly what TP said. And my first poker book was a limit book. Its alot of help. it teaches you odds, and plays, and things that not many pure NL players ( like me ) know. Read anything and everything. Harrington is good, caros was good fun. I need to read hellmuths attempt next i think.

Thanks for the choices. Hellmuth's 1st book was my 1st read. But he covers a few different games. Thats where i first started tightening up my starting hands.

My first book was a limit book as well. I had no idea wtf was going on at all, and I gave up reading it. This was back when all I was playing was home games.

Like you, I started off playing only home games. The first book I read was Theory of Poker. I'm fairly certain a retarded chimp would have understood the concepts, and for that matter games (*cough* razz *cough*) better than I did then.

Sklanky's Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players was my first poker book as well. I keep on meaning to reread it. I am still a low-level player and I recently picked up Ed Miller's Low Limit Hold'em book. Although it is a limit book, I think it has really helped my NL game. I highly recommend it.

I liked the chapter on losing gracefully. It is my favorite.

ya i had no clue wut i was doin at first either - my first book was small stakes hold em -
the really sad part is i didnt even realize it was a limit book till i was about half way through it - and i thought it was the most confusing book ever.

SSHE is the most confusing book ever if it's the first book you read. It was my 5th or 6th and I still had to read it twice. It's also the best book I've ever read and made me a winner.
