opinion on re-buy tornies
ok here is how I play re-buys, during 1st hour I play supertight and try to see some cheap flops but dont commit myself to any pots early. I dont re-buy because for me when you re-buy you are way behind in chips and hate play catchup. I know some of our friends like Daniel play it different but this is how I play it. I always add-on 1st hour and if I bust out before 1st hour im done, Im interested to hear how other play re-buys though, I know TP and chip play them so love to hear what they think.

Always go into a REBUY with the means to rebuy several times.
EG. if it is a $10+1 rebuy ensure you have $60-120 (or more) dedicated solely to this tournament. Keep a careful eye on WHO is playing ultra tight, and who is pushing with any ACE. The "any Ace" guy is likely going to double you up. Immediately rebuy. i.e. you would "buy-in" for $21 ($10+$1+$10). My goal is to finish above 2.5 times the initial starting stack... so in this case assuming starting stacks of T1K, I would expect to finish the hour at T5K+. (Buy-in 1000, + initial re-buy 1000, + 3000 chips earned in the hour.) Add-on is a MUST. unless you are chip leader. If it is a small field then Chipleader or not, Still get the add-on. The Tournament does not actually begin in my opinion until the add-on period is over. See cheap flops with position when you can (levels 1 and 2), Start looking for chances to double up from level 3 and beyond. If you are finding you are closer to the end of the hour, and have yet to double up your 2k stack, it is time to start "gambling", A-10 becomes a "premium" hand at this point.... Do wjatever you can to double up early.... When I hit my first double-up, and I now have T3500-T4k+ I will tighten up and look for a starting hand that I can play hard (and hopefully double up again). Stack size vs the average stack as always means nothing. 90% of the time the guys with the big stacks, are the "gamblers" and have no idea how to tone it down once the rebuy period is over, This is why, in my opinion, it is OK to rebuy lots and lots of times..... You are adding more Chips to YOUR table, Enabling you the chance to take them back when they overplay their TPTK. That's a start.... Gotta run.

Just ended my first re-buy tourney (got 80th when my pocket QQ got busted by pocket kings, top 50 pay out). I have to say I really enjoyed it! Figures that when I'm done there's a string about them here. I'll probably be playing the next $5 one tonight on pokerroom now that I know some basic strategies.

Then you need to enter lower buy in ones...
In my limited rebuy tourney experience, I think planning on 7x the buy in for a is a good idea. Figure you're in for 3 no matter what: The buy in, initial rebuy, and the add on. If you get busted just once, that's 2 more right there. Most of the time, you should get away with less than 7x, but there will be days where you're gonna be in for 9 or 11 buy ins... |

To reinforce what TP and Chip said, I'll paraphrase the advice I(and a few others) got a few years ago from Greg Raymer on 2+2 about rebuys. If you aren't prepared or willing to take every rebuy and add-on to which you're entitled, don't play.
The 7x figure is a solid rule of thumb, though I consider 5x to be my average. The key here is to understand the texture of your table. At a wild table full of rebuy maniacs and little fold equity, you can get away with playing fairly tight as long as you're willing to also take advantage of all +EV pot odds situations (like preflop it's obvious you'll get more than 3:1 for all your chips so you can call with something like 97s). On the other hand, if you're at a tight table, where it looks like fold equity is relatively normal, *you* have to become the rebuy maniac. I've lately been having a ball at the 'Stars Turbo rebuy satellites to the WSOP double shootouts. I probably won't play a shootout, because my work schedule would make going to Vegas next month tough, but I figure if I can bank enough W$, I can use them for the WCOOP. Anyhow, the turbo rebuys are enjoyable, because they're wild early and super-tight late, so if you can get to where there's about 2.5x players/seats left you can cruise to the seat by stealing intelligently. |

well
took chip's advice and played a $1 rebuy today, saw alot of flop early and got lucky once or twice and ended up getting 7th. Only made $5 because only like 28 people added on during 1st break but was good only had to re-buy once. At 1st break was in top 10 in chips about double the average. Thanks for advice chip and co. I will be playing re-buys like that for now on.
