Default Look at these numbers- not me

The past two months have been insane for me, so I thought I’d share my results. In MTT’s, I had that big $110k score, but other than that, I didn’t have any impressive results (unless winning a WPT seat counts).

My luck in SNGs has just been sick, so here are the results:

PartyPoker:
2000+150
Total played = 20
Total Profit = $29500
ROI = 68.60%

1000+65
Total played = 38
Total Profit = $10530
ROI = 26.02%

400+30
Total Played = 102
Total Profit = $7640
ROI = 17.42%

200+15
Total Played = 115
Total Profit = $2075
ROI = 8.39%

PokerStars:

525+30
Total Played = 81
Total Profit = $15,525
ROI = 34.53%

1000+50
Total Played = 36
Total Profit = $11,700
ROI = 30.95%

210+15
Total Played = 3
Total Profit = $270
ROI = 40%

300+20
Total Played = 10
Total Profit = $(-230)
ROI = (-7.19)%

500+30
Total Played = 27
Total Profit = $(-1710)
ROI = (-11.95)%

TOTAL PLAYED=432
TOTAL BUYIN = $252,995
TOTAL PROFIT = $75,300
TOTAL ROI = 29.76%
AVG RETURN = $174.31 PER SNG

My ROI is a bit skewed by the step 4 highers of which I only played 20, but even without those, I would still be very happy with these results. I definitely think I’m playing extremely well, but even still, I have to get lucky to have results as good as these.

This is definitely the best two month period I’ve ever had. I hope I can post similar results in the future.

im pretty impressed.

I know, but the thoughts that ran through my heads in the 15 seconds prior to the last line were pretty crazy.

Here's the thing.... those numbers are VERY impressive. Surely everyone will agree on that. But they are also very BIG numbers. He said himself that this was his best two months. So, let's assume this is about as good as it gets.

Now look at this number:
If this was a VERY GOOD two months, maybe a safer and more reasonable expected return for him would be around $100 per SNG. Is that a reasonable guestimate?

So here's what I'm wondering.... Couldn't he make a LOT MORE MONEY by playing in cash games? Maybe he's a good tourney player and a not so good cash game player... but I have to think his hourly rate would be much higher if he was playing high limit cash games.

Yes, $75,000 is a very nice profit, but with his roll, and assuming he's as good at cash games as he is with tourneys (big assumption), I think he could have made a lot more than that playing $30/60, $100/200 and up.

Thoughts?

Maybe you answerede your own question, maybe he isn't a good cash game player.

I'm not anywhere near the player he is, or you or Pshabi for that matter and we have been over my losing results in the past, but the only place I hae won on any kind of consistant basis is SNG's

A typical cash game for me goes like this (and I'm not joking)

Play tight and fold all but premium hands in position, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold,
Get dealt KK, flop has an Ace and it's three bets by the time it gets to me, fold.

Repeat the fold scenario from earlier, get dealt AA and cap pre flop as well as the flop of 3-5-7, still get bet into and suspect something has gone wrong, check and call to the showdown to see a set of 5's.

Repeat the fold and wait scenrio from earlier and get AK and pay three bets to see a raggedy flop and have to fold.

This is seriously the scenario, now keep in mind it's usually 1/2 or 2/4 so this is the nature of the beast, but I get killed in ring games each and every time I sit down.

In a SNG format I can let the morons kill each other when they get all their chips in pre-flop with A10 vs 33 vs Q9s and can usually start to pile up chips once we get to 5 or 6 handed.

This raises the obvious question "Why don't you play 6-max then?" Well, I don't know, it just doesn't seem to work out either (see above scenario).

Anyway, liek I said, maybe you answered your own question.

Sounds like you're playing too tight. Have you read SSHE? Great resource for loose limit games.

Agreed. You need to be picking up those blinds from time to time and if you are only play the top 10 hands, I think you're missing out. In theory, that will be a close to break even strategy, but you may want to explore opening up your game a bit.

My point was it is possible to do well at tournaments and not cash games. I have heard, but never seen first hand or facts, that Phil Helmuth fits this category.

I can't imagine there's anyway I could make more money playing SnGs than I do at $50 and $100 NL tables, there's just no way. At a cash table I can find and isolate horrible players and basically take them for everything they brought to the table. There are some real maniacs on those tables, all you need to do is be patient, play good cards and let them be the donkeys that they are.

I don't think so, since he can 8-12 table SNGs while at cash games he'd be lucky to find 12 games and would probably have to concentrate on each indivually too much to play so many tables making it at least IMO less profitable.

Why do you think he would need to concentrate more on cash games than on tourneys? If anything, I find the opposite to be true.

Maybe but he claims to play that many tables yet I've never heard of anyone playing more than a table or two at the highest limt cash games.

BTW he does play cash games, I've seen him two tabling $2000 NL a few times which means he probably thinks he has an advantage there as well but the limits simply aren't there to compesate for the money he can make by playing so many SNG's at once.
