Man Utd vs Chelsea
So the final of the Champions league is between Manchester Utd and Chelsea, who do you think is gonna win?
My money will be on chelsea. thadeas. p.s. The game is called FOOTBALL because we mostly use our feet when playing it, why do americans call it soccer as it aint played in just socks, they wear boots aswell. Also why call it American Football when they most run with it in hands? Soccer isnt soccer, we invented it and it's FOOTBALL, the end. |

In answer to your PS (since I know nothing about soccer, other than that my 6 year old son plays it), Americans did not devise the word soccer, it comes from your side of the pond (assuming you are in UK). I guess we took off the "a" and added an "er" to accommodate our lazy accents.
Wordorigins.org "Soccer Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the Association several months later. The name Association Football was coined to distinguish it from Rugby. By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer had made its appearance by 1895." And it looks like Bodog has ManU listed as a slight favorite at -125 to lift the trophy.

Actually, I don't think this is true. I believe the origin of the name "football" refers to the game NOT being played on horseback. why call it American Football when they most run with it in hands? If you want to name our game by what's done most frequently, it would be called "passball" or "airball." And for that matter, why is the germinal game of what we call football called "rugby"? It's not played on a rug.

After I saw the OP, I knew RD was in here somewhere with these comments. Thanks for coming through buddy.
It's fun to make fun of it, but I played soccer for like 7 years...however, I stopped when I was older. When I watched the World Cup 2 summers ago(?) I had been removed from the game for a while but all that fucking flopping drove me nuts. It was compelling to watch, but I was just as turned off by the flopping as I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it is into my favorite sport and it really pisses me off. Man up, you turf-hugging bitches. Do you honestly feel good about yourself trying to draw fouls by fake-falling? It would make me cry myself to sleep if I did that shit...

lol you do relise this is a poker forum.
seriously thou, Kurn you are right, rugby is not played on rugs (imagine all those carpet burns lol) but rugby is more like American football (without the pansy pads) so therefore would be in the passball or dare i say it handball (they should invent a game called that lol) name group. Jhill, good spot with the wordorigins, i did not know that and therefore stand corrected (actually im sitting but you knew that as at my computer lol). let the debate continue. thadeas |

this game has good elements, bad elements, and better elements.
The good elements. It should be a good game. ManU probably will will, although I hate that little bitch C. Ronaldo. Both teams represent all that is bad about globalization in sports, although as soon as Chelsea got all that Russian Mob money they bought the best player in the world at the time to build a team around, Claude Makelele. The bad is that now every time I deal with the any Brits this game will be cited as 'proof' that the Premier league is the best in the world. The better news is that when pain in the ass Brits pull that shit it will be fun to bring up Euro 08. |

Because "running along with a egg shaped object in your hands ball" is a stupid name.
You know, you're really starting to remind me of a former forum member. I'll leave it at that for now. But why does the name of the game have to describe it anyway? I've never understood people who can't get beyond the name of a game. "Tennis? My God, WHAT IS THAT?" "Wait. Checkers? What in the hell is checkers??? Oh, you mean THAT game. Yes, we call that 'jumping the little round pieces diaganolly' where I come from." You must really hate poker games like Stud, Razz, and especially Pineapple. I assume you only play Triple Draw and other aptly named games. |

Chillout TP, this whole thread and especially the ps part was purpose to produce some contravesy and some responses.
You are right the name doesn't actually need to mean anything but it helps if it does i.e. Skateboarding, the original idea was attaching a skate to a board, snowboarding, using a board of some sort across snow. I know these aint great arguments for names ect but its helps and in the UK we play football with our feet. melioris, Claude Makelele as the best player? have you been inhaling some tobacco products that maybe you shouldn't have? thadeas. p.s. TP if i remind you of someone in the past on this forum, what happened to that person? and am i gonna get banned lol. |

I appreciate that you started this thread, I really do. But I got a lot of shit going on right now so I have been a grumpy bitch lately and I can't help myself here.
this is exactly the type of shit I can't stand about brits when they talk about football/soccer/whatever the fuck you want to call it. There is a reason that France won the world cup, that Real Madrid was the best team in the world for the early 00s, that Chelski had immediate success, that Lampard and Terry can dominate for club but suck ass for country, and that reason is Claude Makelele. Although the English "invented" the game, as a nation they display a shocking, yet predictable, ignorance of how it is best played. I think it is without question that in the early 00s if you were going to build a team from scratch, the player that would be picked first (ie the most important player on the team, ie the best player) would be Claude Makelele. Zidane said it best when Madrid sold Makelele for Beckham: "Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?" |

You can get 1.89 on Man U to win the Champions League right now on BetFair.
I think this is great value -- I think the market has been skewed by Chelsea's recent home win against United, when United benched Tevez and Ronaldo (who both change the game). Chelsea are in solid form, but I think United are a cut above and play a better team game. It's hard for me to see the United defence giving up a goal, other than by some freak Drogba strike. |

melioris,
unlike alot of englishmen I dont believe that the english team is the best in the world, you are absolutely correct in saying great players like Lampard & Terry suck ass in the england shirt, a decent england manager would relise this and replace them but unfortunately they do perform for club and being at a such a high profile one only fuels their england chances. I am not doubting that Claude Makelele is a great player and i never really seen him playing when he was at Real Madrid but to say france won the world cup because of one player is a fairly stupid comment, that whole french squad was full of quality players, you only have to look at players like Zidane or Henry and it comes clear why france dominated international football in the late 90's and early 00's. English football is on it's way up again, it shows as we had 4 teams in the last 8 of champions league and two of those made it to the final. Dont get me wrong as im not saying the english teams are the best in the world but we are going in the right direction and alot of the biggest football names in the world want to play in our league. We do however need to concentrate on the international team and we will see if Mr Capello can help. As with my poker skills im a low limit donk in terms of football fans, I support Aston Villa and it looks like we are going to lose our club captain Garreth Barry (he comes from my home town and I went to school with his brothers) and if that happens all the hard work done this season will be wasted. sjay, they are good odds but i still think chelsea will win, i'll bet ya $10 on it. thadeas. |

There is a reason that France won the world cup
I'm pretty sure Italy won the last World Cup.

If anyone listened to me and bought at 1.93, you can now layoff at 1.8, giving you a 13c/$ freeroll on Utd (or about half that guaranteed arb if you don't want to gamble).
I don't see the line changing too much, Utd will probably shorten just a little bit more to about 1.75. I think I'll layoff half my money today and the other half if the line does shorten to 1.75ish, which would give me a $400ish freeroll on united. |

Drogba is out and Terry dislocated his elbow, so even if he plays he will less effective. The line could be changing again.

AND FULHAM AVOID THE DROP!!!!!!!!!
In most countries the soccer league is a single table instead of divided into conferences and whatnot. In England, there are 20 teams in the top league (like major leagues in baseball). At the end of the season the bottom 3 teams are dropped into the second division (continuing the baseball analogy, AAA ball) and the top 3 teams of the second division are promoted up to the top league. This promotion and relegation occurs throughout the entire structure of professional and semi-pro leagues. My team, Fulham, had to win yesterday on the last day of the season to avoid being relegated, and they did! |
