Default online poker-the new D&D?

I saw some dorky looking late middle school/early high school kid walking down the street the other day with Phil Helmuth’s book sticking out of his backpack. This, couple with the fact that some of the hotshot young online players got into online poker through the magic card game, got me thinking. Is online poker the new Dungeons and Dragons?

Any of the younger folks on the forum care to comment?

Big difference - D&D is just a game (As far as I know - I've never played). Poker involves money and could actually be a profession. I don't think there are many professional D&Ders...

I meant it more like this. Back in the day when I was in high school all the real dorky kids hung out in the back quad and talked D&D. I wonder if in these modern times the equivalent to those kids are hanging out wherever talking poker.

Definitely. 2 years ago, kids would be playing video games on their laptops in the student center. Now I cant look in any direction without seeing somebody with pokerstars up and running.

lol ya i have to pay her about $200 a week just to keep her goin out with me.

in reality its quite the opposite - im still very cheap, and only my very best friends know how much $ i made, everyone else thinks ive made a few K, and when they ask i just say around 3k or so cuz i dont think $ should matter obviously.

There may not be professional D&D players, but there are professional Magic players.

Man, if I was a better Magic player, I'd so go pro. Screw this poker crap!

I hang with a ton of different groups at my upper middle class public high school and I don't know of anyone other than me who plays online. That's not to say that no one does but if they do then they are discreet about it.

I know I started playing the game with a select group of people at school. I am still in highschool that I can tell you in my opinion it is the new D&D. Although I have seen it's drop in popularity at my school there are still about 20 people that I know that play poker with idea to better there game. I get called poker geek sometimes when I'm in a conversation with one of my friends about poker but rolls right off me. I do find that slowly the people that I know who enjoy poker stop playing and slowly the number that actually knows about the game and how to play it slowy diminshis until there only a couple of players left. Thats the pattern I have seen so far.

Just to update it for the times I think it's the new everquest. When I was in high school I was in the dorky classes cause of high test scores and some kids I knew got me into that for a little while. Then I realized that I would never get laid if I spent my time killing monsters online. Anywho, back on topic, these kids I knew in high school quit playing everquest and now play online poker constantly. I find it funny that someone else noticed the trend I just assumed that because a few people got into poker back home that it spread being that it's a very social game.

Seward AK is one of my favorite towns on the planet. My wife and I spent a couple of months backpacking around AK a few years ago (damn, almost 10 years ago now) and we both fell in love with Seward. We were there for a week in late September and it was just beautiful. A good bar, a good coffeeshop, and some of the most beautiful country in the world.

As for everquest, man, I don't even know what that is.......

d&d online with tens of thousands of geeks. MMORPG massive multiplayer online role playing game. Sony put out a game in the mid/late nineties and at one point had something like half a million active users each paying ten bucks a month plus fifty bucks every year for new installments of the game.

But basically, my first sentence should have been enough.
