Cash Tables Vs. Tournys
I do pretty decent at Sit N' Go's which i tend to play alot. I decided to start playing some cash games(which i am new at) with my winnings this month - i thought they would be the same thing pretty much but my results are no where near the same:
In Sit N' Go's i have made $250 in the last month In cash games i have Lost $180 the last month I need advice on the difference between these two types of play and how can i get better at cash games ? Thx |

This isnt much, but just to get you started
Sit N Gos people play looser and more aggressive (as they have to, because blinds increase) You can very well be pushing lots of chips in the middle with a hand as weak as A3o when short stacked. There is more blind stealing/defending and different strategies Cash Games favor the better players, because blinds never increase, and it gives them room to be patient, pick their spots and attack -- not to mention be able to not play big pots unless they are sure they are ahead, or not have a large sum of money rest on a coin flip. It also gives them more chances to capitalize on their opponents mistakes, and force them into incorrect decisions. Its more long run...in a tourny if someone calls your all in, which is 1/5 times the pot, with a flush draw when you have top set and catches a flush your out. But in a cash game, this man although he wins a big pot there, will lose in the long run making this call (very very bad) |

From you How to play this hands, I assume you're a NL player.
My advice is too start out nutpeddling, just waiting for the big hands, play them aggresively but intelligently, and make some money off of those, and eventually open up and start playing more speculative hands, Hands that aren't great ones(suited connectors, lower pairs, and so on) but that will get you big pots when you hit and play them right. What might be happening is that your moving your aggresive(and successful) SNG style to cash games, and it is ending up being overaggresive for a cash game. Also, NL cash games are so swingy you might be playing fine but just not hitting cards (what limit are you at?). |

I am way more successful in cash games than tourneys. The blinds never increase and you can be patient and wait for a hand. If you are too aggressive in cash games, that patient player will be waiting for you. These are too different games. My advice is to play a little tight for a while.

Improving ?
I play .5/$1 NL blinds and $1/$2 blinds now. I am honestly a good player and i think this month i have played weak in cash games but Mainly- hit big hands when opponents have even bigger hands. I should probably be more patient, and maybe play better hands. But I've made alot of money playing poker and i think i know what I'm doing for the most part. I think this was just a bad month because i dont feel like my poker was bad at all. Things already started coming around, but i still think i am just all around a much better tourny player than cash player.

Why do you think you are a good player? I'm not saying you are not, but obviously you aren't stating this because of your results, so I'm curious why you say this.
In my experience, almost all poker players think they are better than they are (myself included, I'm sure). Great players think they are the best, good players think they are great, bad players think they are good, and terrible players think they are unlucky. It's a very odd phenomenon... |

Good Player?
I guess i just call myself a good player because i feel i can sit down at a table with just about anybody and never have less than a 40% chance to win honestly. Also, I invested only $50 into Pokerstars right when i turned 18 and have made close to $700 from that.
Am i a Great player? no, i could get much better, play more, and read up on the game more, but i still think im a good player all around. |
