Interesting Article I Read Yesterday
Sitting on the train yesterday, when I saw Moneymaker on the paper, so I picked it up to read it. In 2002, online poker revenue was approximately $200 million. Today, a shade over $1 billion. The industry has had its profits jump about 400% in just about 2 short years. It was a very interesting read, and I would love to post it, but apparently to get the online version you have to subscribe to some stupid Vancouver Sun or something.
I just can't believe how much money is made in online poker. That is an absolutely astounding amount and I'd expect or speculate that $1 billion may double within 2 years.

That doesn't surprise me at all.
Look through all the games going on on a poker server like stars/party, and you will see that at any given time there are hundreds of ring games, with atleast a dollar a hand being taken for rake. Some simple multiplication and its not that hard to see how much money comes in. If anyone is looking for a wise business to start, get some programmers to throw together your own poker interface/ server , and get up and running. Even just hosting simple buy-ins with a rake you can make a mint. |

As the income rises, so will the fed's interest in regulating it for our "protection."
What I really mean is "taxed."

It has to peak somewhere, when do you think that will be? There has to be a ton of losing players, when do they give up and the easy money dry up? Any time soon? Probably not, but it is something to think about.

for everyone that decides they have had enough, someone new will come in....it's kind of like sports betting, that's been going on forever and always will. It will definately peak, but i dont think there will be much of a dropoff when it plateau's....i dont ever see online poker revenues going down all that much....

There are many markets under-represented online and live for poker. Just think about the possible revenue flow once the game really catches on in China and India, the 2 most populated countries in the world. They have almost half the world's population combined, so just you wait and see how much higher revenue goes and how many more losers we will see online.

I think he meant stock as in purchase on the stock exchange. If not then you are absolutly right, I am one of them (for now).

not sure if you were joking or not, but he means if they sold stock in the company that runs party poker. I also wish I could have bought into them about a year and a half ago.....if they ever went public, I can't even imagine what price each share would go for....

It seems to have really taken off. Gone are the days when poker paradise was the only site available to play online with limited games and tournys.
It can only increase and grow as the same rate. The amount of people that come upto me and ask me about poker these days is amazing, cant tell you how many I have refered onto ladbrokes, I should be on commision from them! |

Seems like poker is exploding everywhere. I think it will continue to grow for another 12 to 18 months and then will level off.

i dont really know when the boom itself will end, but i would assume that we havent come particularly close to that point yet. we all marvel at the number of people on sites like party everyday (60k, or something like it), but that is just miniscule compared to the number of potential players out there.
if there are 7 billion people in the world, i would guess that after adjusting for the number of people who do not have internet access and a number of other things (age, interest, sleeping habits, etc.), you have a potential player pool of at least 70 million players. if there are 70 million potential players in the world, then i would say that we really have only seent eh tip of the iceberg. |
