If you are feeling unlucky, read this...
...and you should start feeling better immediately.
That right kids, that there be a out outer. This isn't my worst beat ever, but it's pretty bad, especially if you consider how HORRIBLE of a play he made, calling that HUGE bet drawing to exactly one out. I poker. Full Tilt Poker Game #1429526224: Table Alta (6 max) - $2/$4 - No Limit Hold'em - 0:07:32 ET - 2006/12/18 Seat 1: tehdragon ($485.60) Seat 2: GiVeMeTheCake ($400) Seat 3: AKA212 ($670.30) <--Typical idiot. Seat 4: russ6897 ($225.65) Seat 5: Troll Pie ($450) Seat 6: dustinlax33 ($717.05) dustinlax33 posts the small blind of $2 tehdragon posts the big blind of $4 The button is in seat #5 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to Troll Pie [8h 9d] AKA212 calls $4 russ6897 folds Troll Pie raises to $18 dustinlax33 folds tehdragon folds AKA212 calls $14 *** FLOP *** [5d 7d 6d] AKA212 checks Troll Pie bets $24 AKA212 raises to $100 Troll Pie raises to $432, and is all in AKA212 calls $332 Call of the day, right there, kids. Troll Pie shows [8h 9d] AKA212 shows [3h 3d] I mean, seriously, what could he be chading here? Did he think a 3 would be good? Or was he going for the gutshot? Surely he didn't think he "flush draw" would be good, right? I would literally discount all of those outs to nothing if I was in his shoes. All he can beat is a pure bluff. *** TURN *** [5d 7d 6d] [2s] AKA212: nh But fear not, friends, for the river is here!!! *** RIVER *** [5d 7d 6d 2s] [4d] Troll Pie shows a flush, Nine high AKA212 shows a straight flush, Seven high AKA212 wins the pot ($903) with a straight flush, Seven high Troll Pie is sitting out *** SUMMARY *** Total pot $906 | Rake $3 It's no fucking wonder I can't log winning sessions any more. I mean, this one ridiculous beat alone cost me more than 2 buy ins. And it's not like this is an isolated incident... it just happens to be the worst of today's pile of bullshit. Board: [5d 7d 6d 2s 4d] Seat 1: tehdragon (big blind) folded before the Flop Seat 2: GiVeMeTheCake is sitting out Seat 3: AKA212 showed [3h 3d] and won ($903) with a straight flush, Seven high Seat 4: russ6897 didn't bet (folded) Seat 5: Troll Pie (button) showed [8h 9d] and lost with a flush, Nine high Seat 6: dustinlax33 (small blind) folded before the Flop |

Well, duh.
But there is also nothing wrong with raising with it from the button after an UTG limper with deep stacks, depending on your image at the table, the flow of the game, and so on, IMO. In fact, I'll say that I raise with this here more than 50% of the time, so if you think this is a 100% fold 100% of the time, well, we will have to agree to disagree. |

Also, I would like to point out how unlike where all the money went in when hero was well behind, I was just about as far ahead as one can get when the money went in here. So yeah, this was a bad beat.

apologies for posting strategy thoughts. the one-outter sucks, but i'm just a little confused about raising 98o, even OTB, with a limper up front. perhaps i should have replied with an irrelevant allusion to my own bad luck. |

Wow. As if p-fan didn't get trounced enough in the other thread, you have to stomp on his nuts in here too.

Like I said, if you never raise 98o OTB after an UTG limper, I'm not sure how much more we have to discuss. Cause I do.
Maybe your way is right and mine is wrong or vice versa, but I'm inclined to think either are ok, so long as whatever you do fits with your style and you are a competent player after the flop. I'm leaning (significantly) toward my way, of course, since if you flat out don't play connectors like this, I think you are probably way too predictable at the table and observant opponents will realize you are a nit and never play speculative hands. |

Making a point about what constitutes a bad beat. Nothing personal against Penguin at all.

OK that's fine, and I was frustrated. But I get tired of reading the 1-liner strategy posts with no explanation to them. Maybe sometimes that's all you need, because it seems fairly straightforward.
But, depending on how loose-passive is, aren't you supposed to be attacking their early position limps with all kinds of cards from the button? I don't see how you can just say, "duh, don't raise preflop with crap," when that clearly wasn't the issue in the hand. |

We have to let each other bitch and moan in this section. Its the bad beat section. Not the HSIHPT section right. Of course a little conversation is fine too. But there is never any absolute stone cold RIGHT answer to anything in poker. Maybe Penguin shouldnt have min raised pf with AA. Maybe TP shouldnt play 89o so strong. Who cares really (unless they are asking). The point is TP got the vast majority of the $ in as a massive favorite. Not as glaring, but still significant, is that Penguin got involved in a pot with AA against 7 friggin high. Of course Penguin got most of the money in behind, but he didnt know that for sure, and still had outs to the nuts on 2 streets.
I know I have this conversation with myself alot. It sounds alot like the banter in these two threads. "Damnit, decent sized pot and the guy pairs his shit kicker on the river, sonofa..." "Well you did limp with AT" "Ya so" "You probably would get A4 to fold with a raise pf" "Well maybe, but some donkeys will cold call with that anyway, esp. at $10NL" "Still should have raised there" "YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT, I GOT A DONKEY TO CALL DOWN TO THE RIVER WITH TOP PAIR AND A FRIGGIN 4 FOR A KICKER, AND HE HIT A DAMN 3 OUTER ON ME" Yes, I actually have the conversation with myself. Am I distrubed? My major point is that there is more than one way to skin a fish. And when you get him to overplay a crappy hand and he outdraws you, it just plain sucks. No matter how you got there to begin with. Example: Negreanu slow played AA in the most recent big tourney he played. The guy was raising with something like K6o, and flopped 2 pr. DN got killed for this play mostly (on his own forum even), although he eloquently explained his reasoning, and some people agreed with the play. Just 2 days ago, he played a hand with AA almost the same way, and doubled thru (or busted) a donkey overplaying AQo. I guess I dont think WE should be so results oriented when we critisize someone who lost a pot and played it differently than we would. just my humble |

Button raise with 98o is fine.
All play by you is perfect. When the money went in he had more than one out if you consider runner, runner.(4 of a kind or a 3 and pair the board for fh) Yes on the turn he did have only one out and got lucky. Who knows why he would put all his money in with three overs on the board and you pushing preflop and on the flop. Even if he puts you on AK he is still not that much of a favorite, cause odds are one of them would be diamonds (based on the play). He is just an idiot. If he pushed, maybe he is ok. But calling an all in in his position is definitely -EV.
