Default Frustrating

I think the most frustrating thing about Poker is the up's and down's. You work hard for a week and scratch out a measly few hundred, and then lose it all in one session to the A2o guy who keeps rivering his 2 to beat you! Am I the only one who thinks this sucks? I am sure other people experience this. It is just frustrating sometimes. It is called the grind for a reason!!!!?!?!

i think pretty much poker is a game that has to be played for fun, until you become a true pro. the fact that you can build your bankroll to a certain point and lose it to some idiot, really makes it tough to justify all the time you put into it. i think at some point it becomes a decision as to whether you just like playing poker or you actually want to get serious about it.

Brian, you can lose your whole bankroll playing limit - just probably not in one hand. One bad session at $5/10 L is the same if not worse as a bad *hand* at the $100 or $200 NL tables.

And, by the way, he seems like a good player. I can empathize with his frustration - it happens to me (and everyone else?) all the time.

Default Part of the game ...

Just like the way you can have a huge lead in a race and then blow your knee out, or be golfing the best game of your life until you shank one into the woods. It's difficult, but is an essential part of the challenge of the game. Besides, if weak players never got lucky, they wouldn't stick with the game as long as they do to lose it all back, plus some.

yea i agreee but he was saying he lost his whole bankroll in one hand unless I missread, which is possible. Dont know im a better limit player then no limit so alot of my answers contain the words play limit.

Yeah I Mike the mouth was right when he said that this's a sick game. It really is.

NL can be quick death (one or 2 suckouts ruin your session/week)... Limit is more of a slow torture .

I agree just try playing consistent good poker and try not to focus on the money...

Cheers,

Gutzz

Default Not Clear

I guess I was not clear:

A. I do play limit, and I am refering to the single night swings at 3/6.
B. I am not refering to my WHOLE bankroll. I took $200 and brought it up to $2400, somehow without going mad. Mostly playing limit. It now sits there.

I am just saying that the ebb and flow of the game is frustrating. I had my bankroll up at 3K, and lost some, and got back up to a tad under 3K, and lost some.. it just seems so not worth it some days. You spend a week building the bankroll and bring it back down in a day or two of bad sessions. I enjoy the game, but I also (wrongly) judge my success by my bankroll and it seems like I am only moderatly successful sometimes. I guess as a relative newbie (6 months) I am at a point where I am questioning the game, and how good I REALLY am at it. How much is suckouts and how much is bad play? How do you really gain confidance in your game if HE is so volatile? Where do you really look to plug holes? It is such a complex and facinating game, however that makes it really hard to know what the right move might be.

I.E. I am facing a Maniac and a Calling Station Player. Different hands. I have TPTK on the flop, no flush draw, no straight draw. The Maniac and CS in our respective hands both raise my flop bet. Well, doing the exact same move against both players is wrong. The Calling station will not raise unless he has a good hand. As a matter of fact he probably will not raise unless he has a DAMN good hand. He would rather call his two pair to the river and flip. You might consider folding here. The maniac on the other hands is raising 3rd pair and trying to scare you off your hand. You might re-raise him here. Same cards, different strategy.

So anyway.. just venting on my recent frustration. Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate them.

another tip - stop playing online poker if you get swings this bad. i noticed that i get FAR fewer suckouts and FAR fewer people willing to call me down with rags to try to catch their runner runner in real life. maybe it's just me though.

thats why I tend to play only MTTs and occasionally sngs. Much safer for my relatively small bankroll. So far, (although only a small sample) i have +ev and plan on playing mostly MTTs for a while.

I would love it if I could just play MTTs, but I wouldn't make any money. I have to play ring games and SnGs > make money > and then play in MTTs for experience and fun. The way I see it, the only way you MAKE money is if you do *really* well - and even despite one's talent, the odds against are tremendous.

But this works for you, so keep it up.

I guess there is a lot to be said about the differences between tournament players and cash players. It's a completely different game.
