i have heard of the onion before, but never read it or known what it was about. i cant beleive they dont get sued over stuff like that, or do they?

You cannot sue over satire. Neither can you invoke copyright law over parody. Its a form of speech protected by the 1st Amendment.
Most people do not undertsand that to successfully sue for libel, you must prove both material harm and malicious intent. Satire does neither.

not really the same...SNL you can see that its not really the person being portrayed, but like this article , not knowing it was satire, there really is no way to tell unless its printed somewhere
