Default In the right corner we have Ace McAce...

Since I am struggling to find work at work, I was messing around with a hand calculator and thought I would give everyone a quizzy quiz quiz.

What pocket pair stands the best chance against pocket aces, say for our argument AcAh?

What are the best cards to have against pocket aces?

Obviously this is dealing with a heads up preflop dealio...

I'll guess the best hand is 56s and the best pocket pair is 77.

I would thinkg 66-99 would all be the same... but if I had to narrow that down, I would cross off 66 and 99 first, and the 88... so that leaves me with my least favorite hand of all time: 77. With suits, I'll say 77

For the second question, the answer is 78s (either or in this example), right?

my guess for best hand against AA is T9s (of one of the two suits that one of the aces doesn't have - so, for your example, T9 or T9)

As for the best pocket pair to go up against? I'm guessing 99, unless it's TP holding the aces, in that case, KK.

LOL. Douchebag. Did you see yet? It's quite ironic now that I see you made this post while I was typing it up.

Hee hee. Yep, I just finished reading that thread. Actually was one of the best write-ups on HHs that I've read in a long time. Not only did I learn something, I had a good laugh while doing it!

Default Because 7 ate 9?

If this is not the case, I'd appreciate an explanation of why, say 7-7, would be better than 9-9.

something to do with straight possibilities. you cant make the bottom end of a winning straight with 99 vs AA, whereas you can with 77. Dunno if this is right, just my guess.

And the answer is....8 8 is the best pocket pair against aces. Why sevens don't come out to the same percentage I do not know, but it is 20.07% for eights and 20.05% for sevens.

For any 2 cards, either 87 or or 67 or is 22.87% against aces. And eejit is correct about the straight possibilities playing a factor here in both cases. 9 being the bottom end of a straight makes A the top end of that same straight. Whereas 6's cut off one possible straight.

I wonder why 8's have the advantage over 7's, is it because of the 2 pair possibilities? The ace kicker is going to win in all 2 pair situations with the 2 pair on the board being higher than 8s, and having 8s is better than 7s in that situation.

According the the HendonMob Poker Calculator

56s (not the same suit as any of the aces) is the best hand against aces at 23.05%, 67s (same deal) is 23.03%, 78 (same deal) is 23.02%

For pairs 66 and 88 tie

66 and 88 are both 20.19% (both suits different than the aces)

77 is 20.17%

That's...... odd. I mean, I get everything but the very small .02 differences listed - like, I don't get why 88 AND 66 are better than 77. I also don't get why 67s is better than 78s, even thought it's only .01.

I DO understand why 56 is better than then others though, since it takes away a 5 that the AA could use to make a wheel, while still able to make it's own 2-6 straight. I hadn't thought of that when I originally replied.

In other news... I set this up ages ago, but never got around to prettying it up, so I never mentioned it. Whatcha think?
