The word is that they spread 1/2 and 2/4 NL in addition to the two scheduled tournaments and SnG's.

I'm guessing the 10% rake (for charity) is uncapped and may make the cash games unbeatable. The vig on the tourneys may be the same.

Here's an that soewhat addresses the legality of the game.

I might have to make a scouting trip soon. It would be sweet if this caught on and other charities started doing the same thing across the state.

What I think is most interesting here is that your "donations" are tax deductible. That shouldn't include ALL of your losses, but rather only the part going to charity (the vig/rake), but it's not clear in the ad.

I also don't see how this is legal and expect it to get shut down sooner than later.

How the hell can you expect people to keep track, legal and auditable track, of the rake?

You can't obviously, which is why I think they may be implying that you can claim ALL of your losses (Which is obviously not the case) - OR, they mean that you can claim any EXTRA (not poker related) donations you may make. It's pretty vague.

Is this any different from most "charity" events?

I've been on both sides of the fence for other charitable organizations. When collecting donations for raffle or auction we give the donator a receipt for the value of the donation, other items were purchased, but when these items are auctioned off the person that won doesn't receive anything noting the fair market value. So, how do they know how much of their "donation" went to the charity and how much is tax dedutible? For that matter, how much of the purchase price of the ticket to attend is tax deductible?

A buddy of mine was in Portsmouth this weekend and checked out the action.

First, it seems Portsmouth passed legislation to make poker equivilent to bingo for charitable fundraising. I'm sure there a some pretty stringent regs governing it.

At 1pm they have a $25 tournament with unlimited rebuys for the first 1.5 hours and an add-on. $1000 in starting chips, $1000 rebuys, and $1500 add-on ($25 each). This Saturday there were 104 entrants and they played 8 to a table, self-dealt. It sounds like they take out 50-60% for charity and the rest goes into the prize pool. It paid out the top 8 or so and 1st got around $500. You got a receipt for your buyin and each rebuy/add-on.

At 7pm they do another tournament with the same structure, but $50 buyin/rebuys/add-on. Buddy left before this one started.

The cash games, at least on this day, were 1-2NL and 2-4LHE. 9 -handed with "professional", but unpaid (no tips) dealers. They rake is $2 for pots between $7-$49, $6 for $50-$99, $12 for $100-$299, and $15 for $300+. Buddy played 1-2NL. The buyin was $100-$300. He bought in for the max and sat down with a chip lead. He said the game was very soft and he was able to walk away up about $100 an hour later having caught absolutely no cards the entire time.

Overall, I don't think I'd play the tournaments and the rake on the cash games seems excessive, but it sounds like the game is soft enough to still turn a profit and get some live experience. At least this game, 2.5 hours away, is a decent alternative to AC, 5.5 hours away, for a poor shmuck married with 2 young kids.

Edit: Portsmouth is actually 1.5 hours away, not 2.5.

Did your buddy say what kind of "tax deductions" he got for his cash game play?

No receipt of any kind for cash game play. IMO, if this deal does get shut down it'll be because of these side games.

A discussion he overheard while there indicates that another charity has started a similar event on Sundays.

Another observation: Physical security is not an issue (this isn't in the best part of town)! The tournament chips were pretty generic, but considering the relatively small amount of money at stake and the number of Portsmouth's Finest overseeing everything I can't see sneaking in chips as a real issue.
