Live play vs. internet play
this thread is to compare which one you like the most, I know most will say they like internet play since I never see any threads out there on live play on here.
My opinion is I like live play 100x better, actully find myself playing freerolls only online to practice for live play. Yea I know what you all are going to say freerolls are terrible and you dont get any real practice but ill have to disagree after the 1st hour the play in freerolls is actully not that bad. If I had $300 dollars given to me tommorrow id rather wait a month and go to a live casino then put it online. I can make alot more money off people at live tables then online, Im actully pretty good at reading people and I have a very, very good memory so I can remember exactly what he pushed in with 3 hours ago. Last time I went to a live casino within one hour I knew exactly what kind of player everyone was at my table but enough about me want to hear what you all think so share with us. |

i'm more sucessful in live play, generally because i like to be able to see the body language of my opponents. I'm by no means a master of tells, but seeing someone when they actually play, i believe makes it easier to put them on a hand, instead of guessing by their position.

I played live once for pennys with a few friends for fun (not poker players). It was really difficult for me. I had the hardest time hiding my glee when i got a good hand. The more I tried to not smile, the more I smiled

I like them both pretty much the same..... I have not been in any live cash games yet.. only free tourneys at local bars...( i just hate having to travel, play for hours, and maybe not win ).
I'm a a more consistant winner at the live tourneys than I am online.. but, I have poker tracker now, so, that will change relatively soon, I'm sure... oh, I've got the book, Theory of Poker as well. I like having the chips and the cards in my hands.... it suprises me, each and every time, no mattre what mood I may be in, sad, happy, drunk, angry, bewildered, tilted, confused, whatever... but, the anticipation of peeling up the corner of my first card, then my second... and it doesn't even mattre what they are.. it is just so exciting to me... always has been, and still is...just sumtin about wondering if 'are these "my" two cards.. are these the cards I've been waiting on... heh.. sounds silly.. oh well, so be it then. |

When I play in a live tourney I like that more than playing online. Only exception is when the play is so slow. However I like to play online a lot more since it is so easy and there is also a game if that makes sense. I also don't like to drive that far for a game since if i don't win it will be a looooong drive home.

Profit vs. fun
My profit rate is higher online. This should always be the case, as you do not have to tip dealers/cocktail waitresses. And the quality of play at the 3/6 game at my local card room is far, far better than the 2/4 game on Party.
But for all of the advantages of online play – the convenience, the fact that my living room is non-smoking, etc. – I still don’t count it as REAL poker. Unless I’m holding cards and have to meet my opponents eye, it is at a best a facsimile of the real game, kind of like arena football. |

Actually, it is a fact. If you are a winning player at a particular limit, online poker allows you to not only play more hands at a single table, but you have the opportunity to multi-table as well. Even if you don't multi-table, you are still saving money from tips along with the decreased rake. Using the "more-hands" logic, you would ultimately win more BB/hour.

that is pretty much true, except for those of us that keep our refreshment cash separate from our gaming cash... whereas insotherefor, it would have no bearing on our hourly rate.

I think the heart of poker is playing it live, but we just have too much access to it on the internet. Definatly two different games.

Personally I enjoy playing live over online. The only thing that is better in online poker is the convenience. I do seem to focus more playing online than I do in live games, probably because I know all the people I play against live while online you sit down at a table largely clueless as to how the others at the table play.

You're probably right, I'd take it more seriously vs strangers.
Is the average 3/6 B&M player betterthan the average 3/6 online player? I always thought 3/6 online would be like 5/10 irl or 10/20? The rake irl must be rougher to beat than the online yes? so winrate is reduced? Cheers, Gutzz |

Live is harder
I don't have enough experience playing at the higher limits in B&M to know about them, but I can say with some confidence that your average 3/6 B&M players is better than your average 3/6 online player. It is just easier to make stupid calls online. The rake is a good question, and probably differs by local cardroom and online casinos.

most card rooms have a cap on the rake depending on where you go and you can ask for relief from the rake if your shorthanded like 4 people or less. As for the play of 3/6 in B&M I dont find it hard at all of and the players chase like hell no matter what seems like there there because they want to lose there money, and im happy to help them out!!! |

In SoCal, the live games can be a lot looser than on-line at the lower limits. I've recently been at 6-12 with half the table seeing the flop, many with trash hands. My theory is that players who hang out on the Internet tend to read and learn, and over time the online games will get tougher. A lot of the cardroom players don't like to read, so they are plateaued and may fall prey to newer players who educate themselves.
If you are going to play B&M profitably, be sure to study the collection structure since it may change the EV of certain plays, such as blind-stealing.

Yeah, so do I. Sometimes when I'm on the internet i practice shuffling stacks of chips or cards. Anyone who heard my exasperated comment about shuffling chips before, I finally got it! I can shuffle two stacks of 10 about 80% of the time!

Actually it still does have a bearing on your hourly rate.
As does the cost of the gas to get you to the casino. And anything else that costs you more than a penny from the time you step out the door until the time you return. Nice try though... Have to love Creative accounting.
