ESPN's Jackpot Jay
... discovers what we've known for a while.
"I had folded pre-flop in a $10-20 game. The guy in the big blind, having already invested his $10 blind, decided to call a pre-flop raise with what turned out to be 7-2 off-suit. When the flop came Q-10-7, he was in for the duration of the ride, no matter what the cost. So despite the best efforts of his remaining opponent, who bet or raised on every round with what turned out to be K-K, our hero was still hanging in there when the river brought a 2. As the guy with the K-K messaged after the hand, "Hey, are you (bleeping) serious?" It is true that, in the long run, guys who call K-K with 7-2 are going to lose all their money. The problem is, if you are sitting there with A-A, and six guys with 7-2 or the equivalent are calling you, at least one of them is bound to outdraw you more than half the time. And for better or worse, that's exactly what happens quite often in online poker games, especially below the high limits." Yeah, welcome to my world, Jay. |

who doesnt play poker nowadays? is it too big? is it possible to have too many fish as the post suggests? how good do you have to be, and what limits do you have to go up to before it is not a friggin minefield?? I mean I guess most of the serious online players make money in the long run (or of course they would no longer be serious internet players). So if the money if there for the taking in the long run great, but are we all going to die of heart attacks while yelling at a computer screen someday??????

hey
I dont concider myself the best poker player in the world but I can hold my own at the table so I say the more fish the better. I dont have the money to deposit online that often so thats why i play freerolls to many expenses (2 kids, WIFE...big expense hehe). I also dont think the play in freerolls is that bad after the first hour but thats a subject for another thread, thats why I like limit poker I make money of those fishies in the long run. I mean I still remmeber winning 5 bucks in a freeroll and moving it up to $300 in matter of a day thanks to the fish paying me off... so I say bring on the FISH. |

More importantly it shows you how the value of even AA goes down the more people in the pot. That is why I NEVER slow play AA in a game with more than 5 people at the table. If you think I am wrong consider this very stretched out example, say you are 10 handed and have AA, all 9 people call with KK, QQ, JJ, TT, 99, 88, 77, 66, 55, who is now the favorite, well you certainly are against any one hand, but someone is gonna catch over 5 cards with the exception of a board like 2-2-3-3-4, 2-2-2-2-3, etc... The value of AA goes down farther with everyone who calls the pot.
