Windows Security Update

Not sure if you're aware of it, but there's been some reports lately of people getting hacked, by someone operating there system remotely. A few reports have surfaced of people infiltrating Party Poker accounts, and playing them from remote systems. This was before the software update.

Here's something I just saw from Windows. I'd update if I were you.

There's been book-long discussion on this over at the nameless big forum, and it has been near impossible to follow, which is one of the big reasons why I prefer this forum. The general consensus seems to be …

1) The stories of people getting hacked don't seem very credible, but there is much debate and back-and-forth about this.

2) Microsoft Anti Spyware appears to be detecting 'trojan.backdoor.small.fb,' on computers with Party installed. This is a false positive, and doesn't actually indicate a Trojan, just a problem with the compatibility of MS's Anti-Spyware or Party's software, for which either or both parties are to blame.

3) That all said, it is essential to practice good Internet security if you are playing poker for money online. Make sure you have firewalls and anti-spyware in place. Use unique and complex passwords. Don't fall for phishing scams.

I've posted before about how I have my Poker accounts tied to an entirely separate bank account from my mortgage/wife-and-kids/real-life bank account, which I think is also a good practice.

I don't even run Party anymore, but I read the thread anyway because it sparked my curiousity.

I think 2-Tone's summary is spot on, so read it. Nice job.

(Minor details about item 2 is that it appears Microsoft's program is simply doing a filename check to determine if that specific back door is installed. It appears that Party's software places a file with the same name in the same spot as that trojan. Total coincidence, but it still belies the ineptitude of the Party software team, at least in my opinion.)

lot of these 'hackings' have been reported lately on fulltilt, where i can be found nowadays...

in most cases however, a dumbbell or two would click on an 'official-looking' popup window offering a huge cash bonus if only they input their login info, including their password.

well, u gotta be that stupid to be taken in by something like that.

else, security-wise, ive had the following run on my PC and never had any problems whatsoever: zonealarm firewall and avast antivirus. both excellent and free of charge. and for extra support, popupcop, which among other things, helps prevent silent installation of malware, the most common way for trojans and worms to get to ur hard drive...
