Playing from the small blind in Limit
In pshabi's thread about PokerTracker stats it mentions that a good number for VPIP from the SB is 25-35%. Mine is more like 45%.
Lee Jones says as long as there is no raise ahead of you, you can complete your bet in the SB with any Ace, any King, any two suited cards, and any connectors down to 54o (he doesn't mention pairs specifically but I assume he includes them in "any reasonable hand"). I've already noticed that if I do this, and even if the flop hits me, I struggle to play the hand correctly. I'm first to act on all the rounds after the flop, and I constantly get shown better hands than mine at showdown. What's a better guideline for the small blind? Should I play it more like I do when it's late and there are lots of callers? That would be... -any pocket pair -any suited A, K, or Q -suited connectors down to 54s -suited one-gap connectors down to 53s -off-suit connectors from AKo to JTo -off-suit "big" cards, like AQo, AJo, ATo, A9o, KJo, KTo, QTo. In the loose, full-ring games you're playing in, I like Lee's guidelines. If you're in the SB and 4 people call you're getting 11 to 1 assuming a (1/2 blind structure). You should be playing damn near any two in that situation.
From other stuff I've seen, you need a tune up post flop. Good news is, you're posting a lot of hands. I'm gonna be your best friend and refer you to some links here. Read and answer the questions and honestly before reading the responses. Then, go get the book that contains them. It was the single most important factor in helping me become a winner.:

i think lee's point are good. I think its easier to be calling the big blind in limit because you don't have the threat of a monster raise coming, so if you have ok cards and have a nice stack you can call and hope for no raise. And he can only raise twice the big blind pre-flop so i normally like to try and see a flop. There are your obvious fold but at low-limit i think you can be more aggresive with what cards you choose to play.

2/4 vs. 3/6 vs. 4/8
In a 2/4 game with 1/ 2 blinds, I’m completing with almost any two cards if there’s no raise in front of me. Even with only one caller, it’s still worth it. You just have to be willing to let go of it if the flop doesn’t look friendly.
3/6 with 1/3 blinds is different story. I’m folding all trash hands, and depending on the nature of the table makeup and number of limpers, playing only “reasonable hands,” much like the list you presented, perhaps even a little tighter. For 4/8, I’ve seen different kinds of blind structure. If it’s $2/$4, see first paragraph. If it’s 1/2, like a lot of the Vegas card rooms, I’ll freely admit I haven’t figured out the right strategy. |

I think I would try that strategy for a while and see how it works out for you. In limit I try to play tighter too, since the best hand on the river is often the one holding the best starting cards. I hope this strategy works out ok for you & you start winning more! Cya later!

Pshabi’s right …
… and both points are important.
1) Should have at least 10 big bets in front of you at all times to be able to fully take advantage of a great capping opportunity. If you drop below this, rebuy or leave the table. 2) Winning or losing in any given session should not be influence your play/strategy. Many players get overly loose when they are winning (“Hell, it’s not my my money …”) or losing (“I’ve got to get unstuck!”) by a significant amount, and neither makes any sense. If I always followed my own advice, I’d be a better player. |
