Off suit paint MP unopened pot
Say you are playing at a NL 9 man table. Players 1-4 all fold and you look down to see a hand like KJo or QJo (maybe even KQo). The table isnt overly aggressive or tight. Open, Limp, Fold?

open, baby!
at least this is the move i almost always make (unless the table is very aggressive).. if you're going to play this pot w/ those cards.. you have to open.. i don't see how you can justify limping. i guess the case could also be made for folding, but, thats a little too conservative for my taste. |

I would open as well, but you want to be careful opening/raising with different amounts based on the strength of the hand. Would you open 300-400 with KQ, AK, 99, etc? Then your open for 250 would make it smell like a steal and you might get more action then you want with a marginal hand. Winning the hand right here would be a good thing.

true, but he is in mid to late position, and it would depend on the table style, players reads e.t.c, the respect i am getting, that kind of stuff, but i agree with your point

I disagree with opening for only 250. Im a firm believer in consistent raises, only varying them as a function of how many people limped in before you, and what position youre in. Generally, 3 to 4 times the big blind.

Something I've been toying with lately is opening different amounts not based on pocket cards, but based on your position. Because you get so much more respect when you open from early position than you do when you open from late position, I've found that you can open for less money in EP than you can in LP. Play with it and see how it works out for you...
Try opening from UTG for 2x the BB and from the button for 4x the BB. MP would be 3x the BB and the inbetween spots would be inbetween (or randomly varied). I'm not sold on this yet, but so far, I like it. It seems to accomplish exactly what I want it to accomplish. |
