I wonder if now would be a good time to tell you I've played a round with a putter exactly once in my life before. I shot a 105 that day.

That was on a significantly easier course than this though. This will be close, but I still think I can break 120.

We are shooting for Friday at 3:30, btw.

Hehe well lets just say I was pretty sure you had done around that before. But well see how the course treats you Strategic hazard may make a course 1-2 shots tougher for regular golfers, but im counting on a 3-4 shot difference for you

We'll see.... I think I'll be ok, but it's certainly not a lock. I haven't even bought my new putter yet. I need to go get a $10 one at Wal-Mart (since I don't want to ruin my putter). Last time, the one I was using was fairly bent by the 15th hole, making things very interesting.... hence me insisting I get to bring an additional putter to put with this time around.

Usualy people can't even believe it when I tell them I shot a 105 with a putter. I have to say, that was one of my single greatest "sports" memories of my life. The bet I had then was that I couldn't break 180! I figured I'd shoot around 145 or so. My friends conceded the bet after my tshot on the third hole, but I decided to play it out anyway. I actually beat one of them that round!

For comparison sake, I think the best round I ever shot at that course was maybe an 89. I usualy shot in the mid 90s there.

At Baytree, where I will be playing this time around, I usually shoot in the high 90s or sadly, low 100s. One time, I actualy shot 2 over par on the back 9 (two lost balls) for a 38 - my single best 9 holes ever. Of course, I had shot a pathetic 53 going out, so I still ended up with a 91.

Win or lose, this is an awesome bet, and it's going to be a lot of fun!

Bought my new putter last night. $20 at Wal-Mart. It was the cheapest I could find.

Hoping to tee off around 3:00 today. I'll let you know how it goes.

My Prediction: 118.

The results are in:

Like the dimple marks on the putter on the left??? That was the one I used for everything up until the green, which is when I switched to the one on the right.

I bought a new putter at Wal-Mart last night, but didn't end up using it. When I was getting my golf stuff ready to go, I found my old-old putter and decided to use it. I took along the new one, just in case, but ended up not even taking the plastic off of it and returned it to Wal-Mart on the way home.

Even though I was allowed to, I didn't take a single practice swing before teeing off on the first hole today. My friend Jeff was my official scorer, but my Dad came along for the round too. My parents are in town this week, and I haven't golfed with my Dad in ages, so that was cool.

They teed off first on Hole #1. And then I stepped up. First swing, 200 yards, straight down the middle of the fairway. Nice! My drives ended up being right up there with theirs most of the day. The only difference was mine were usually closer to the middle of the fairway. I shot a 7 on the first hole. I can live with that.

Hole #2 is a Par 3 with a LOT of garbage to clear. I was pretty nervous about it, actualy. I hit my ball STRAIGHT AT THE PIN, but it went way long. It landed on the back of the green and came to rest at the edge of the woods behind the green. I managed to get a 5.

Holes 3 and 4 went well, and Hole #5 was a Par 5 that I managed to bogey. Sweet! This bet is going to be cake, right?

Not so fast. Hole #7 was my first disaster of the day. I had the best tee shot of the three of us, but my second shot sliced into this hardpan-type sand trap, well below the green. I hit a great shot, or so I thought, considering my lie, but the ball hit the lip of the trap and fell back in. So did the next shot. And the next one. Uh oh. Time to get creative. I literally turned around and hit the ball left handed with the BACK of my putter to lift it out of the trap. It worked, but I ended up getting a 10 on the hole. Ouch!

On Hole #7, I was just off the edge of the green in 2, and ended up getting a 6. Did I mention how my on-the-green putting was terrible today???

Hole #8 was as hard as I expected it to be. I put my second shot in the water (my first lost ball) and ended up with an 8 after leaving my final putt about an inch short. Aaargh.

Hole #9.... UGH! You'd have to see it to understand, but everything that could go wrong did. First, I hit my first bad tee shot of the day, and lost a ball. Shot #3 wasn't much better. I put shot #4 into the woods that you HAVE to clear to reach the green, and #6 went into the woods OVER the green. I ended up with an 11 on the hole, giving me a 65 on the front. Not good. The bet looked like a lock after the 5th hole and now I was behind. I needed to shoot a 59 on the back to push and a 58 to win.

Out: 7 5 7 5 6 10 6 8 11 - 65

When we got to Hole #10, there were people there waiting for their friend and they wanted us to play through. When they saw me with my putter, I had to explain what was going on and they were intrigued. "Oh, I have GOT to see this," one of them said. Great, now I've got a crowd watching. I hit the ball really straight, but "only" about 180. I put my third shot into the woods over the green (my approach shots were by far the most difficult for me) and ended up scoring an 8. It was right about now that I was getting ready to panic. Damn me for picking this course!!!

I managed to relax and put up some decent scores in the next few holes. I shot a 6 on 11, a 4 on 12 (impressive, considering my tee shot landed in a sand trap), and 6, 5, and 6 on the next three holes.

Through 15, I was sitting at 100 strokes even. With three holes to go, I knew I needed to average less than 8 on the remaining three holes to win. Definitely doable, but you never know. I certainly couldn't afford another disaster hole.

My first two shots on Hole #16 were two of my best of the day. Distance-wise, I was well ahead of my Dad and Jeff (who was in absolute awe of my second shot - 200+ yards from the fairway). Shot #3 was the one that killed me though, as I sliced it into the lake. Doh! My putting sucked when I finally got the the green, and I scored an 8. Crap. I was really hoping to get a little ahead there.

Hole #17 was a Par 3, but it's a weird one. It's got this massive packed sand trap all around it, and there is a lip getting up onto the green. It was a decent distance for me though, and I thought I could get on the green. Well, I ended up slicing into the woods WAY back on the right. I stumbled on a snake while looking for my ball and decided to drop. I then hit an AMAZING shot onto the green (I landed it on the hill just before the fringe perfectly, and it bounced onto the green and ran to within 5 feet of the hole). Naturally, I 2 putted from there (I hadn't sunk a single putt longer than 3 feet through 17 holes at this point), but scored a 5.

Whew! One hole to go and if I can shoot a 10 or less, I win. This is doable, right?

My first shot was a beauty, but it left me with a tricky approach. My Dad recommended I just take it easy and lay up once or twice (it's very thin with water on the left and sand on the right), but I had to go for it. Ooops. Into the sand. Or so I thought. When I got to my ball, I saw that it had kicked out of the sand by maybe 4 inches. I was able to 3 put from there to get onto the green (I had to go around the back of the trap). I'm now lying 5 and need to FIVE PUTT to win. I'm WAY on the other side of the green, but not even I can blow this, right? Of course, there is water maybe 8 feet beyond the flag if I putt too far - and it's downhill too.... so I intentionally left it way short. Maybe like 12 feet or so. And then I drained my longest putt of the day (literally my only putt longer than 3 feet) to finish the round. Nice!

In: 8 6 4 6 5 6 8 5 7 - 55

Total Score: 120.

Winner of the bet: TP

Thanks for the fun, Defendant.......

I gotta see these putter drives some day. I have tried them myself but not with that kind of success. In fact I would be nervous playing you if i gave you 10 strokes...

No problem. Seriously, no hurry on this at all. This was great fun.

The drives are no problem.... like I said, I was regularly outdriving the other two (mostly because I was hitting them so straight). It was pretty crazy.

If I used a full set of clubs today, I think I still would have shot over 100. both the guys I played with did (close to 110, I think), and they are usually mid-90s golfers. It's a tough course, and it was BRUTALLY hot today.

If I could play on some easy-ish course up north, where the rough isn't as punishing (thick) as it is here, and if I could putt for a damn on the green that day, I seriously think I could break 100 with just my putter. It might take me a few tries, but I know I could do it.

BTW.... had you shot a 72, you would have beat me, you know. So yeah, this was pretty close.... When I guessed I'd shoot 118, I was really hoping for 114, but trying to be a little conservative.

I was way nervous at the turn today.
