Sit N Go
Is it me or are more players getting dumber.
I've ran into this situation at least 4 times in the last two days. Top 3 pays. 4 Players left. One is extremely short stacked. Short stacks goes all in, I'm in the SB and flat call, and the BB checks. Flops all garbage, so I check....then the BB will bet hard into the pot. I have nothing...so fold. Only to see that the BB also has nothing and letting the short stack triple up. I don't understand why so many players continue to bet in this situation when A) Increase the chances of making the money B) Even if you get me to fold, you might and most often don't have the SS guy beat C) You show your 'bluff' and how retarded you are. I wouldn't care so much if it didn't keep costing me money with the results. I just find some of these plays just really annoying |

yes
totally agree with this, don't see why you would bet someone out instead of just checking it through to eliminate someone. |

I agree. Daniel Negreanu has written about this before, it's called bluffing into a dry sidepot. He hates it as well for obvious reasons.

in the unwritten rules of poker your never suppose to bluff in a sidepot where a short stack is allin like that.
That pisses me off so much. Alot of people that play dont understand this and think they are gaining something by doing this. |

It makes me crazy.
I got into a huge argument at a home game with a guy one time who bluffed me off a winning hand (on the bubble) with his 5 high. Yes, 5 high. No hand and no draw, and the person we had all in took down the pot. His logic was that he wanted to get me out and then hopefully hit his 4 or his 5 and then have it be enough to win the main pot too. Moron. |

what if....
what if you have something like AK and the flop is three rags? You could 'bluff' at the pot - you might even get the limper to fold something like bottom pair (i would fold bottom pair to a big bet thinking 'If this guy is betting in this situation he must be strong!'). Then your AK is heads up with the guy who went all-in. He might have moved all-in with two paint cards - now you are favorite to win the hand.

Look at the big picture. You have the ability to increase your chances of eliminating an opponent and getting into the money right away. You make that bluff, you give this opponent the opportunity to triple up and get back into the game.
The only time you should bet is when you have a huge hand and can earn more chips off the other player, which means two pair or better to me. The only time I think it's okay to drive opponents out of a pot like this is by raising preflop with like aces/kings/queens to limpers in the hand. You're more than likely to be a 3:1 favorite to most cards the limper went in with...and you want to limit the field to take the pot. Bluffing with no made hand is one of the worse plays that occur way too often in SNG's. Lately the thing I see all too often is someone calling my all in's with K rag. I don't know why these guys want to take a shot to knock me out with a large amount of chips for them to call off as a 60:40 dog. Since when has K rag been such a strong hand? |

I'm in agreement with Windbreaker here. When you're on the bubble especially, betting anything less than a monster is a horrible play. Check it down.

Im in agreement for the most part here too. Novices example MAY hold water if the pot is a large pot. For example blinds are 100/200 average stack is 5000, you have 6000 and Player As all in is 1800 (not unreasonable 9x BB means almost any raise is a push). You call with AKs as does another player with ??. There is now 27 BBs (5400 chips) in this pot, you figure your opponent not to have a pair and your AK to be good, if you get your other opponent with mid PP, lets say, out of the hand.
Of course you could be completely wrong and look like an idiot, and Im not saying its something Id do often, but if the pot is big enough that its worth taking a chance of not eliminating a player to steal this may not be as poor of a play as it seems. While taking this risk of not eliminating the player, you also take a chance of getting the 3rd opponent with a better hand out and giving you a 5400 pot, making you amoungst the chip leaders now. On the bubble this obviously goes down in value even more so though Last edited by Zybomb; 07-28-05 at 08:32 PM. |
