Short handed - Strategy change as player numbers change?

When playing at a standard 6 player table, as with any game players leave and join, quiet often the table will carry on playing with 5 or 4 players,

Do good players actively adjust there play to this lower number of players, particularly pre flop where hands like Ax surely become more profitable in the OC or button, whereas a tight player may fold these if 6 players at the table.


Also, say Im first in with a raise on the button with A7 on a 4 player table, is that in the long term likelt to be the same profitability (or should I be saying EV) as if I did the same play in a 6 player game, 1st in on the button.

As the number of players at a tble goes down, the strength of your hand goes up.

AJo UTG in a 10 player game is basically garbage. In a 4 player game, it's quite strong, and should be played much differently.

I was thinking more from 6 player down to 4 player, what extra hands might you play from UTG in 4 player that would be folded in 6 player?

I don't know about everyone else, but I think it's very difficult to answer questions like this. It really depends on the table, positions, etc.

I would say that you should be looking less at the starting hands in this type of game and only be sitting in/staying at this table if you are VERY good at reading your opponents. You would not want to sit around waiting for a certain set of hands as the blinds would eat you up.

Is this N/L or limit? Just realized you might be talking limit, in which case you should be a little more concerned with starting hands. But still, good players are going to see that you are playing tight and raise you off hands if you don't loosen up from the "accepted hands".
