Default Dealer Mistakes?

While in Vegas last week, I was in a NL game and lost a hand for $84. My two pair went down to a higher two pair, btw. The dealer matched our stacks and pushed the chips to the guy who won. In the middle of the next hand, the guy who won shouted "wait a minute! wait a minute! I didn't get the whole pot! the dealer shorted me $20!"

Play stopped and the guy started whining about being shorted $20. He just kept on saying "I need another $20, I need another $20!" I watched the dealer match the stacks and I don't think he made a mistake but this guy just kept on whining. The dealer and everyone else said the pot was right but this guy just kept on going.

The dealer called a floorperson over but he was at another table and in the interest of getting back to the game, and the fact that I was having a good night, I just gave the guy another $20. He still kept on whining though.

The floor person eventually came over and said he should have checked the stacks before the hand was over and that once another hand started, that hand was over. He just kept on whining even though I gave him $20. The house offered to give me $20 when the dealer verified I gave the other player another $20. I took the money and then left because this guy was too much to take. He was still whining when I left.

Would anyone else have given the other guy $20? I don't think the dealer was wrong but I just wanted to play more poker.

Default on principal alone....

There is NO WAY i would have given that guy $20 - i wouldn't have given him $2, except maybe i would have thrown it on the floor and made him pick it up.

One time, i was playing a low-limit cash game in a casino and some kid splashed the pot with a call on the river when he knew he was beat. I was sitting next to the dealer with my chips stacked. His money rolled towards me and then a $5 chip fell off the table (it rolled between the little gap between the barrier and the dealer). I picked it up and put it on the table - sort of away from the stack so it could be seen. The dealer swept it in and slid the pot to the winner. Then the guy who won started complaining that his $5 chip was in my stack (keep in mind i had it piled up in stacks of 10s - nothing unstacked) and the dealer agreed with him. The kid and I argued with that guy for 5 minutes - he gave up but then the dealer started in on us. There was NO WAY i was giving that dork $5 - again based on principal alone. A floor person finally came over and other members of the table verified i had put the $5 back on the table. The dealer still muttered something about how i didn't - he and the kid argued for another 10 minutes (i am stubborn, but not THAT stubborn - i let it drop).

I wouldn't have paid him a nickel.

And for the second scenario, I would have told them to check the tapes and demanded an apology from the dealer.

I, too, would not have paid him anything. Generally, once the hand is over then it is just that, over. Nothing can be changed at that point. And although it is the dealer's job to make sure the correct amount of money is in the pot, it is also the responsibility of the player to verify that the dealer has not made an error. Even if a mistake actually was made, the player must bring it to the attention of the dealer before the next hand. If he waits too long to realize the mistake, then I say tough shit. It's just as much his fault as it was the dealer's.

I on the other hand would have done something different...

I would have taken $20 worth of chips, asked them if this was his $20...
Then make this statement. "I am now using your $20 as a cardprotector."
And proudly make a big deal of mentioning what great luck "his" $20 were bringing me.... = Insta-Tilt.

hehe... nice.

I've done similar things, where someone gets cocky with an inferior hand, I take the pot down, and then stack his chips nicely off to the side of the rest of mine, so I can admire them..... and "they will be right here waiting for you" and that sort of thing.

Tilt is good stuff.
