To chase or not to chase?
ok ive been reading through Doyle's book and he loves to run the connected suiters and just the connected cards. He is in love with J-10, well I won $1.00 in a freeroll on noble poker (im rich now) and ive started playing .02/.04 with it and im up to 3.35 by taking his advice and running those kinda hands for a bet. So the quesion I ask you my fellow poker experts is when is it good to chase, all books have different opinions so I want yours. I know you need as many people in pot as posible to pay you off , which is not hard to do playing .02/.04 but when do you chase?

well the best times to chase these are actually when there is a reasonable raise in front of you (he tells you that actually JTs he doesnt like as much as something like 67s because chances are likely any cards that help you completely miss your opponent). he said he'll call off about 10% of his hand preflop, and if he misses completely get out. catching a pair with a straight draw, flush draw, etc he'll push depending on the situation. i've found that i can really crack people when i catch with the connectors, just take them as they are -- drawing hands. don't get too involved before the flop (really about 15% is the max i will go with connectors) and don't try and bluff at a pot with them.

actully he says he like JT because it makes 4 nut straights, its the only 2 connectors that do this. |

My take
I'd guess that playing .02/04, it make sense to play J-10 because players are going to call, call, call, virtually gauranteeing you pot odds to chase the straight. But you could well run into trouble if you try and take that strategy to higher limits, as you will likely have fewer callers and they are going to make you pay for chasing it.

One thing I feel the need to add here....
Doyle is talking about NL.... not limit. You are aware of this, right? |

yes
yes very aware of that, in limit he basicly says go in with the best, I still like to play the connectors if I can get in for 1 bet there easy to lay down if I dont flop a open ended or a made hand. |

Actually, Doyle doesn't say anything on limit, it's Bobby Baldwin.
You better make sure that when you're going in with j10 that you're in late position, with 4 callers minimum, without a raise. You shouldn't be calling with those in mid to early because you may not get enough players in or you may get raised. If you don't have enough people in the pot, you shouldn't be calling, even if it's for one bet. I dont' care what your session memory tells you, you will lose money in the long run if the pot odds aren't big enough. |

uhh...... chase when pot odds justify your call? seems like pretty easy reasoning to me......

Yeah..... I guess I'm not really sure what the question is either? It's so broad... can you maybe be a little more specific than "When do you chase?"

clarify
Well ive been talking to people and some never chase and then some chase but never a gutshot. Was just wondering on everyones personal opinion, just wondering how many people you want in the pot to chase something or how many bets do you personally call to chase it, I know it depends on the pot odds also but some have to have personal rules they follow when they decide to chase that 4-8 outer to make the best hand. |

I only chase when I think I got good odds. Especially gutshots. I LOVE chasing gutshots when I have odds, especially when it's to the nuts .
Probably the only chase I might fold is when I have second pair or third pair, and I can chase for 2 pair or trips. Some instances, even with what look like good odds, I'll fold. Cheers, Gutzz |

You're telling me you wouldn't call if you were getting 12:1 on your money? Also note that I said, "especially when it's to the nuts." Most gutshots to the nuts also include an overcard or 2. Yummy indeed. :P
Gutzz PS. I understand that at levels you play at, it's rare for there to be enough money in the pot to justify a gutshot chase; but for the loose games I play in, often I'm getting 15:1 or better . |

I don't play big stakes at all... 2/4 3/6 bit of 5/10 (dabbled in 10/20 the other night, Won the first pot and ran with my tail tucked between my legs )

"Won the first pot and ran..." You really should keep that to yourself lol! j/k .
But I didn't mean to say that you played big stakes. I just figure the guys there play tighter. What's the average saw flop for the 2/4 and 3/6 tables you play at? Cheers, Gutzz Last edited by Gutzz; 01-11-05 at 09:56 PM. |

When playing NL if you have KJ hearts and say the flop is Q107 with 2 hearts i have absolutely no problem raising this hand and or putting another player all-in( cash games) even if your behind your the favorite against most hands that would be betting.

well
well you have 17 outs to make your hand you should raise that, and if the 10 and queen are of hearts you have the royal flush draw which could win you extra money....yippie. |

I'm not too proud to say I was in over my head...
I had top pair and top kicker and was very nervous when the pot cleared $100 at the turn... guess I was thinking I can't affort to lose... sure I could afford to lose the one pot and have lost bigger pots than that, just the amount of the blinds and the fact it was 3-handed scared me with the potential losses....I cashout every month and only hold a bankroll that would sustain a regular 2/4 player ($500).... although it was considerably higher when I joined the 10/20... so yes, I ran like a little girl when I won that first pot. On the other hand I have no problem putting my whole table stake into the middle at the 1/2 no limit game. Go figure eh? I actually prefer a tighter table so A) I can limit suckouts and thus variance down. and B) pull more moves... like representing a jack in a 5/10 game when there are 3 jacks on the board and I have bupkis.... I wonder if a certain someone will remeber this hand? On a side note, I just cannot play the 2/4 BadBeat table anymore... I only play pairs to the flop and A suiteds at this table now... Routinely get 6-9 callers..... Just fucking sick.

Well then, that's easy. In limit, it's simple math. In NL, it's all about implied odds.... and is usually correct to chase more - especially draws to the nuts.
