Default Gap theory in relation to live/online limit/NL ring/tourney

I remember reading a strategy book, maybe salansky or Jones, where he mentions the gap theory. His advice was to bet many more hands than you would call(or raise) on when in early position, especially in tourey's(due to the fact that it's tougher to call then check or bet). I applied this to my tournament play (was playing $10 and $20 party sng's), and it worked well(especially due to the fact that many of those nuts call with just about any draw). But then I shifted to 6-handed ring games, and it lost it's positive effect. I'm just wondering if you guys think this theory is only effective for tourney's, especially no limit's., or If it can be applied to higher limit ring games. A bunch of questions here, any advice on applying this theory would be appreciated.
