Default Slow Playah

So when is it ok to slow play? When do you normally like raising the turn? I was in several hands last night where I slow played a bit and it caught me. For instance I have AA. I call a raise pre-flop. The flop is J34. So nothing really scary. However I want to win this thing right here and now. So I bet the pot ($4) and get one caller. Now at this point alarms are going off.. I hate when people cold call decent sized bets in a 50/NL. The turn is a Q. I am still HU against one guy. Not even the pre-flop raiser. So I bet another $4 into the pot. The river is a 2. Nothing bad, right? I bet ten bucks. I get raised another ten and I am committed to see the hand now. I guess I could have walked away. However, yes, he did catch his open ended straight and I am down $30 on my first hand of the night. Could I have pushed him out with a bigger bet on the turn? If I make a bigger bet on the turn does this leave me paying more off to small trips, two pairs, etc.. When do you slow play, and do you lay down to the $20 bet at the river when the guy makes his hand?
