Default Prop betting at B&M

So the last couple visits to the local B&M made me realize something...

If you take someones money, they are willing to do a lot to get it back. The following happened a few days ago:

1-2 NL table, 100$ buyin. After about 3 hours I had singlehandedly broken one player in a few hands and decide to leave. I announce to the table that im out, just enough daylight to get 18 holes of golf in. The guy jumps up and asks me if I have an extra set of clubs, hed like to win his money back. I didnt, but offered him he could use mine, and of course, being a scratch golfer, the guy didnt stand a chance (really, unless youre making a living off of playing golf, I know I can beat you consistently). He ended up losing 100$ to me at the poker table, then another 140$ playing 10$ a hole. Ever since then, I realized if I drop the right hints to the right people I could pick up a nice extra income to the poker by getting people to bet me for golf.

Problem I see is this though:

A) How do I entice people to give me action on the course?

B) How long until I will completely stop getting action from these people? Should I play below my abilities to continue getting this kind of action?

C) What are the chances I run into someone who can consistently shoot under par golf and cleans me out on these bets?

D) Should I worry about the ethics of this kind of bet (knowing Im very VERY likely to make money off any match)

This is one of the funniest things I've read in a while. Although I'm sure it's not that hard to scam a few bucks off guys and get a free round of golf from them....I don't htink it's something you should be doing long term. You're going to eventually see the same guys again on the poker table and people may think you're hustling them.

Just treat poker and golf as entertainment and let those guys go nuts =P

Yeah ... the casino i go to has a rather small poker room (12ish tables), so you see a lot of the same faces there a lot. The idea just came from the fact that, while I have an edge in poker (or so I would like to believe), my edge in golf would be a LOT bigger, and more tangible. I just dont have the time to hit 5,000+ balls a day to actually turn pro, not to mention the kind of money it takes to get and stay on tour (seriously...its RIDICULOUSLY expensive, Ive seen many a talented golfer have to quit because its just far too expensive unless you start winning immediately once you get on tour, which is quite unlikely)

Yeah, this would be good once or twice, but the last thing you probably want to do is get someone thinking you "might" be hustling them.....and THEN lend them a golf club in an remote field....

Canada Bill Jones if memory serves.

As far as hustling someone goes all I can tell you is I have played with/for some of the best pool players this area has to offer (which is not Vegas standard by any stretch) and the key to continue getting a players money is to never give him any clue he is being hustled. He has to leave thinking he just got unlucky or one shot would have changed things. I have heard guys paying out big bets to friends/partners of mine while saying something on the lines of "If I had made that 7 ball you would be paying me".

Thats the beautiful part, they think one shot cost them the race when in reality they never had a shot, none, period.

I was at CJ Wileys bar in Dallas a few years back (several actually) and saw the worst/best hustle ever. This guy was playing horribly hoping to get action from another guy, I mean he was bouncing balls off the table in an obvious display if incompetence to get action. Well, the guy he thought he was hustling agreed to play with him and the original guy just played his absolute solid best game he could play and worked the guy over and took his cash. What was really going on was the second guy just used that as set of games to size up his competition.
When he offered to play the guy again for 10 times the original bet the first guy though he found the sucker of all suckers when in reality it was him who was the sucker.

I know thats not what you asked about, but think about it before you get in too deep in a game you think your a lock, "The balls roll funny for everyone now and then"

LOL, I own three movies, two of them have been referenced in this thread. Now someone throw in an Oceans 11 reference and you will have my entire library.

would be an interesting match for baytree, if YOU play from gold or black.

If you choose to play from the blues at baytree, well need to shave 3 strokes off the 50, or I play at The Creeks, link above.

Note that Prairie Creek is the toughest public course in the state though, so I fully expect to shoot in the high 70s. Advantage to you Id say

Considering where you live and as often as I get to Atlantic City I would say we can make this happen.

Bring your "A" game though, you'll need it, I won't dissapoint you.

If you think you might be seeing these people again, then don't win 16 out of 18 holes, but win somewhere around 12-13 holes, make him win a few so he thinks he may have a chance. This will keep the hook on him.

If you don't think you'll ever see these people again, clean him out.

Cool story, cool thread.

Other than the betting part of it, how was the round? Was the guy cool, or was it like spending 4 hours golfing with an online poker enemy? I can't think that would be too much fun.

I don't have much hustling advice, but I don't see any problem at all with getting some over-confident guy onto a golf course and letting him give you his money. What you need to do though, IMO, is forget this small time stuff and go for the big hits. Try to find someone willing to play $100 a hole. Or $500 a hole. Be careful choosing your mark, of course.... but if you are a scratch golfer, you should be fine.

Now... on to something much more important. I have a "prop" for you. You say you are a scratch golfer. I promise you that I am not - not even close. In fact, I don't think I have played a round in more than a year now (it's cloe though - I played last summer). So, given all that, I'm willing to make you a friendly wager. Give me 50 strokes (yes, 50), and I'll take you on using only a putter. I know, I know... 50 strokes sounds like a lot. That's about 3 per hole. Did I mention I will only be using a putter?

Whadday say?

LOL. Defendant replies... How much you wanna bet, Mr. WSOP? This oddly reminds me of Tin Cup.

Anyone wanna play some Chess for money?

I'll bet any reasonable, yet still friendly amount.

Fine print:

1. If you allow me to bring 2 putters (one for putting - one for everything else), I will agree to not practice even a single put-drive until game day. Also, if I break a putter, I'd like to be able to replace it with another.

2. We need to mutually agree on the course. I can't risk ending up on some crazy water course with island greens, etc. Even if there is just one sick island green type of hole, it would be sporting of you to give me a max stroke limit.... say 12 or something like that. I'd hate to play 17 great holes and then shoot a 35 on some stupid island green.

P.S. Tin Cup used a 7 iron. Pussy.

Something tells me this is not the first time TP has made this particular offer. But how far can you drive with a putter? If this comes to pass, I'd be up for some side action.

Actually, putter drives arent too shabby. The part thats REALLY tough is approach shots, no way to get a high trajectory, spinning shot.

I'd be quite happy to make a bet on this too (I love betting on stupid shit, in case you couldn't tell). How far do you think I can drive a ball with a putter? How about if I bet you that I can drive at least 8 out of 10 balls farther than 100 yards?

As for me running this hustle - er..... I mean.... "taking part in this challenge" in the past: No comment
