When Do You Move Up?

I know this is asked and discussed everywhere, but it's a topic that we all have to face eventually. I recently moved to .5/1 and have even played some 1/2 (I'm a poor boy!). I'm having no problems (SO FAR ) with either, but I don't want to over extend because I know the draught is coming.

So you're playing limit? Everyone knows (most people) that 300 big blinds is a decent bankroll. So try out the limit once your roll grows to 300.

If you drop back a few bucks, then move back down to a comfortable limit and rebuild that roll.

Don't think that you're going to have a 'bad run', if you think like this, then you'll just hit a dry spell sooner than you should... IMHO .

move up when you can feel completely comfortable with an average loss.

i was playing the 1/2 no limit games on 7 sultans, and even though i was beating the game, i couldnt take the swings. i didnt really have the bankroll for the game, at that time, and it affected the way that i played. if you can deal with the fact that you will have days where nothing works out, and you lose a couple of hundred bucks, then you can probably play at that level.

my best advice would just be to take a shot. dont sit down with your whole bankroll, but take enough of it to the table so that you arent limiting your play. if you are profitable at the game, and you feel comfortable with your bankroll, then go on playing.

I really think if you have a 300xBB bankroll and are beating your current level go ahead and move up. There is really not much difference between .50/1 and 3/6. I would take a shot at it if you can handle the swings. Just make sure you have 600 bucks!

I play NL.

When I move up, it's more than just getting a large enough broll...

Usually it's a combination of playing a lot of hands at my current limit (at least 20k), with a nice winrate, and finally having a large enough roll.

Then, after I've done all that, I'll do a temporary move to 'test the waters'. If I get owned or suffer some serious bad beats, I'll move back down to rebuild my ego. Then try it again after that. If after a few times you start to feel really comfortable at the higher limit, make a more long term move unless you lose like 12 buyins, then move back down to rebuild.

It's especially important to move back down if you don't intend on redepositing with other funds, because if your bust your roll and have to start from scratch... it's no picnic .

Just like to add that I think 20 buyins is a good roll, I like to go with more when moving up to handle a few bad swings and for an 'adjustment' period. If you're at a limit you crush, then you can do well with less.
