My WSOP dreams are over, how you doing?

Got very close (heads up once) for a main event seat, but couldn't finish him off, got reasonably close on two other occasions, but what really put the hammer down was a phone call a few minutes ago from my boss.

No chance of getting enough time off to go, we had been going back and forth on weather or not I could get the time off and I really thought he was leaning towards yes, but not to be.

Guess it's the long distance rail for me, again.

Talking Poker 06-25-06 12:03 PM

That sucks.... and that Heads Up bubble must have REALLY sucked.... ugh. Hopefully next year.

Will you be able to come out even for a long weekend that first weekend? I know a few people are planning on doing that.

Penguinfan 06-25-06 12:11 PM

Suck is not a strong enough word man. It was a $160 DS, I actually played in 4 of them because I won a $615 seat and just took the W$ since I really thought I had a better chance in a SNG format.

Made the second table twice, played horribly the first time chasing draws that I really shouldn't have been, the one I finished second I had better than a 2-1 chip lead when we got heads up and actually tried to make a deal for the seat, but support said no deals at these tables, you had to play to win. Got all the money in with AQ vs A4 and at that point I all I was thinking about was "Vegas and the fucking Mirage". I will never forget the 4:s: on the turn, never.

Hadn't thought much about coming out for the weekend since I work a lot of Saturdays as well, I do want to pick up a couple futures tickets in the sportsbooks so, maybe.......

Talking Poker 06-25-06 12:30 PM

Ugh...... that REALLY stings.

At least the WSOP is played at the Rio and not the Mirage. Surely THAT makes you feel better!

Penguinfan 06-25-06 12:35 PM

So we're clear, it was a quote from Rounders, you knew that, right?

PShabi 06-25-06 12:44 PM

I'm still holding my head high as the only poker player in the world to have never seen that movie!!!!!!

Zybomb 06-25-06 12:45 PM

 , if I wouldn't get a reputation spread around message, I'd set you in a check with a - rep!

Edit: Cincinnati Kid?

PShabi 06-25-06 12:48 PM

Nope. Since I started playing poker, sitting down and watching TV for two hours straight seems like the biggest waste of time to me. Sporting events only and that's usually while playing.

Talking Poker 06-25-06 12:55 PM

So watch it ON YOUR COMPUTER while you are playing. I've watched hundreds (literally) of movies this way.

And yes, of course I knew where that quote was from.

PShabi 06-25-06 01:37 PM

One monitor, 4 tables, no room.

Boobie Lover 06-25-06 02:31 PM

Buy new monitor. I love the dual monitor setup.

Talking Poker 06-25-06 04:50 PM

Hells yeah.

Take a night off from poker and use the $400 you would have lost to buy yourself a sweet new monitor.

Penguinfan 06-25-06 04:54 PM

That's just cold.

Reel Deal 06-25-06 05:32 PM

My dream is still out there... will play the $650 on Stars the Sunday after the 4th of July.

Penguin... out of curiosity, why did you think the $160 shootouts were the better chance than the Sunday $650? My thought is that the $650 awards a seat for roughly every 18 in the field while the shootouts have only one seat up. Did you just think that having 4 cracks at it was the best route for you?

2Tone 06-25-06 05:57 PM

Sorry to hear that

Penguin, what would have happened had you won that match, then found out from your boss that he wouldn’t give you the time off?

Penguinfan 06-25-06 06:02 PM

Here was my thought process, for some reason I am just not doing well in MTT's, I honestly can't find the leak other than I am just getting unlucky at all the wrong times, though finding a way to avoid or survive those spots may be a leak in itself.

In a normal MTT they pay roughly 10% of the field depending on where you play, well one seat for 18 players is closer to 6% of the field, I just didn't like those odds. I am a reasonably decent SNG players and thought that four shots at that game should get me to at least one final table. Again, being better than average (IMO) gives me at the very worst a 1 in 7 shot of winning a seat. Had I been paying attention to the lobby board were it clearly states no deals can be made I MAY have thought twice about going that direction.

Flawed logic, probably but thats the path I went and like I posted earlier I got heads up and got the chips in with the lead and had a dominating hand, guess it just wasn't meant to be, this year.

Penguinfan 06-25-06 06:16 PM

I had honestly thought about that before, and I was playing under the impression I was PROBABLY gonna get the time off.

Had I won and after the fact found out I couldn't go it would have went like this:

I could have got one week unpaid off for personal reasons I'm sure, so I hope like hell I play day 1C or 1D which would be Sunday or Monday, then my second day would be Wednesday and third day Friday. I am still in the "unpaid" week off and if I'm still in the tourney I believe I'm in the money at that point as we are down to 600 players. Now I can still play Saturday (down to 300 players) and Sunday (down to 150 players).

Now, if I bust on Sunday I am spending some of the money I won on a red-eye back to Pittsburgh and get to the office in a really bad/tired mood Monday, but life goes on as normal.

IF I am still in the game after Sunday a hard decision needs made, I call the boss and explain the situation and hope he understands, otherwise it is time for that hard decision. I am a top salesman for the company and have a very good resume, MANY companies are looking for top notch salesmen, I am CERTAIN I can find a job somehwere and may have to go that route considering there are only 150 players left, what would you do here?

If I bust on Monday, the day they play down 60 that is the then current worst case scenario. If I survive till the final table I am not going back to that job anyway.

I guess I had a plan just in case, but it's all for nothing now as I doubt I even play in a satty since I have already been told no. It's easier to ask forgivness than permission.

Tony Cheval 06-27-06 12:52 PM

Haha, right there with you man.
