The TPF Heads Up Challenge - August, 2005...

Ok, here it is - the official thread. We've been talking about this contest for long enough that everyone should know what's going on, but for anyone new to the site or anyone who wants to review how we got here, here are a few links for you (there were numerous threads before these, but these are the important ones):

This is now the official TalkingPoker.com Forum Heads Up Challenge (August, 2005) thread. I thought about closing it to replies, but this seem like as good a place as any for people to talk about the competition (or to say how great the prizel pool is). Please do not post in here to set up matches and that sort of thing. Use PMs for that as much as possible and post the agreed upon match times (and the eventual winners) in the correct thread, linked to above. I will update this thread with the results as the competition plays out, probably daily.

Ok, on to the rules...

General
The TalkingPoker.com Forum Heads Up Challenge (TPFHUC) will be a month long competition, featuring 5 rounds of Heads Up matches. We're starting with 32 players and will play a mostly single elimination tournament (March Madness style) until we have a winner.

All matches will be played at . I spoke with a number of other sites, trying to get them to set this up for this, but in the end, it was more trouble than it was worth. Bugsy Club isn't the best site out there (it's small), but it's going to work out perfectly for this. After you download their software and create an account, log on. Click on "FreePlay" and then select "Heads Up." This is where all matches will be played at the agreed upon time. Timing it so both players are seated in the same freeroll can be tricky, but by using PMs, AIM, etc, it's not that hard. It just might take you a couple of tries.

The tourney structure can be viewed at the site, but basically, you start with 10,000 chips and 25/50 blinds, and blinds increase every 10 minutes. I think this is a great structure for this tournament. I personally don't like their software very much (be warned: the action buttons are probably backwards from what you are used to), but it's free, and should suit us nicely.

*** Important Note ***
Rounds 1 and 2 will consist of single elimination matches with the winner advancing to the next round. Rounds 3 and 4 will be a best of 3 series, where the first player to win 2 matches advances. The final match will be a best of 5 series. For the rounds with multiple tournaments, you can play them back to back, or space them out over a few days - whatever works best for the two of you.

Round Time Frames
All matches for each round need to be played within the specified time frame. Each time frame is approximately one week, which should be plenty of time for each pair to coordinate schedules and play their match(es). The time frames (and the maximum number of matches to be played per round) are as follows:

Round 1: 8/01-8/07 (1)
Round 2: 8/08-8/14 (1)
Round 3: 8/15-8/21 (3)
Semi-Finals: 8/22-8/28 (3)
Final Match: 8/29-8/31 (5)

The Final Match round can and will be extended if necessary. Also, with the exception of Round 1 which can't start until 8/1, matches may be played ahead of time if both participants agree. For example, if ChipFish and Pshabi both complete their Round 1 matches by 8/3 (and both advance, of course), they don't have to wait until 8/8 to play their Round 2 match. They can play it any time they like, so long as they are done by 8/14. In theory, this entire contest could be over by the middle of the month or so, but I'm setting up these time frames just to be safe...

*** When you and your opponent agree on a time to play, please post it in . It is also the responsibility of the winner to make another post in that thread letting us know the results. ***

Disappearing Participants/Bad Behavior/etc.
Hopefully this won't be a problem, but in theory, someone could have signed up for this tournament and then dropped off the face of the earth. If this is the case, I will try to find an alternate to take over their spot, but they may have to forfeit. If someone is completely unavailable for the entire time frame in which they are expected to play a match, they will forfeit. If both players are unable to come up with a mutually agreed upon time to play, I'm honestly not sure what we'll do. We'll probably discuss it openly as decide as a group which player will advance. Hopefully this won't be an issue.

Also, this should go without saying, but I expect everyone to behave throughout the competition. If you wouldn't say or do it at a poker table with the tv cameras on you, don't say it here.

Regarding the above, hopefully it won't come to this, but if I have to, I'll make the judgement calls. Any and all decision I have to make will be final. Let's hope it won't come to that.

Prizes
As you know, I was hoping to get a poker site to sponsor us and kick in some cash, but none came through, so being the great guy I am, I'll contribute the prizes myself. The prizes are:

1st place - $50 cash, an autographed Phil Gordon "" DVD, and a TP.com hat*
2nd place - $20 cash and a TP.com hat*
3rd place - $15 cash
4th place - $10 cash

*First and second places will receive personalized TalkingPoker.com hats if they don't already have one. And no, if you win one now, you don't get another one when you reach 1000 posts. This is just a way to get your hands on one a little bit (or maybe a lot bit) ahead of schedule.

All cash payments will be made via .

TPF HUC 2?
If this is a success, and I hope it is, maybe it will turn into a somewhat regular thing around here. Maybe we'll even be able to find a poker site interested in getting a few dozen or more new players to sponsor us. The possibilities are endless.

Have fun everyone!

Aequitas58 07-31-05 12:20 AM

This is really shaping up. I wonder came up w/ this great idea??

Edited to add: :D

Talking Poker 07-31-05 12:35 AM

Ha. Nice.

You like the prizepool? It's definitely our biggest to date. Not bad for a tourney ANYONE could enter. I didn't even require a minimum number of posts

Aequitas58 07-31-05 12:37 AM

Yes, definitely.

Very generous, considering this is all free entry.

drewjax 07-31-05 01:01 AM

TP, can you provide a link to bugsys club? So if any of us sign up thru it, and eventually deposit/play, you would be linked, etc...

Talking Poker 07-31-05 01:04 AM

It's there in the original post, but hee it is again:

BlibbityBlabbity 07-31-05 11:39 AM

I agree, VERY nice prize pool.... :)
There are (2) 3rd place finishers and (4) 4th place finishers, right?

Talking Poker 07-31-05 11:43 AM

Um, no.

And I guess I should have spelled this out. First and second will be obvious (final match players), but to determine between 3rd and 4th place, the LOSERS to the semi-finals (the guys from the Final 4 who don't go on to the finals) will have to play each other. I also suggest a Best of 5 series for that, but I'll leave it up to them.... If they only want to play 1 match (it's only a $5 difference), so be it.

kkirk1329 07-31-05 03:37 PM

very nice prize pool, thanks for kickin in all that cash TP

Zybomb 07-31-05 08:41 PM

Ditto -- we need to get TP somethin for his birthday

Gordogg 07-31-05 10:27 PM

Thank you , TP. You rock!!

PShabi 07-31-05 10:58 PM

Thanks TP.

But I'm skeptical about best of 3 and best of 5 series. I would've just went one and done. MAYBE, best of 3 for the final or semis.

I don't know though. It'll probably be fine.

Either way, thanks for putting so much into this.

Talking Poker 08-01-05 12:25 AM

You guys don't need to thank me until you win :D

As for the Best of 3 thing, I too would have preferred single matches, but most people wanted at least a Best of 3 format, so this was the compromise I came up with. There are 31 matches total. Of those, 24 will be single tourneys, six will be Best of 3 (to determine who gets in the money) and one will be Best of 5 (the championship). I think that's reasonable.

I certainly won't be posting updates after EVERY match, but we are officially underway now and the first match is complete.

Player down.

junYUN 08-01-05 03:24 AM

ooooooooh pshabi just fucked his own bracket

Tony Cheval 08-01-05 08:06 PM

Someone put out an APB on Quint please?

PShabi 08-01-05 08:46 PM

Fuck it. Take every win you can get. Even if it is by forfeit.

You're my "horse."

Talking Poker 08-01-05 09:48 PM

Actually, this is where the "alternates" will come in, if necessary. I'm not really sure how much time we should give these MIA people though. I guess I should have figured that out and spelled it out in the rules.

Looks like we're gong to have a lot of matches on Sunday (hopefully). Weren't rchamberlin and robthedlphin supposed to play today?

robthedlphin 08-08-05 12:08 PM

Yes, and also the next day. I guess he forfeit?

GeoffM 08-08-05 12:10 PM

Alright, time to update this bracket thing I guess.

Who forfeited, didn't play etc? I'd like to know how many more stiffs I am going to have to roll over :D (j/k Blibbity).

Sorry guys, I meant to post this last night but forgot. Here is the current bracket.

We got all the matches in except for two. Remember though, this is supposed to be a friendly competition, so before we forfeit anyone, let's try to get these matches in ASAP.

If those of you who have yet to play yet are able to set up a match today for today or tomorrow, we'll allow it. Otherwise, I guess we'll have to decide who loses, which based on the post I've seen, would likely be rchamberlain and ChipFish.

If yellowcab or pshabi (Round 2 opponents) object, we'll have to decide how to handle this... because it's not fair to make them wait all week and risk not being able to get their Round 2 matches in.

So come on guys, let's finish up these Round 1 matches ASAP.

ChipFish 08-08-05 10:39 PM

2Tone and I are within an hour of confirming our match for tomorrow evening.

PShabi 08-08-05 11:20 PM

Sweet fucking christ, get it done already.

GeoffM 08-08-05 11:53 PM

LMAO.

Your choice of words make me laugh. I emailed a friend of mine today and told him I'd have a better chance of getting a hold of God himself, LOL, ROTFLMFAO, where the fuck is my cell phone, FUCK.

robthedlphin 08-09-05 07:55 AM

If rchamberlin or any alternates can PM me before 10 AM EST today I'll be online and waiting for a match.

Talking Poker 08-09-05 08:15 AM

Penguinfan - you're in if you are interested...

2Tone 08-09-05 02:24 PM

It's on!

Chip and I, 11:30 p.m. ET tonight. Sorry about the delay, we'll try and make it worth the wait.

ChipFish 08-09-05 11:35 PM

I'm here now....
Just going to download (Through TP's link of course) and then we are all set.

Aside: 2Tone is gonna kick my ass. :(

The latest...

robthedlphin - please play either rchamberlin (if you can find him) or Penguinfan ASAP. You need to get your first round match in the books, so yellowcab will be able to play his Round 2 match.

robthedlphin 08-11-05 12:17 AM

I'm available everyday from 9-11AM EST if someone is looking for a match :)

Talking Poker 08-11-05 05:58 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Can you play him, Penguinfan? Otherwise I guess we'll have to forfeit rchamberlin from Round 1 and move robthedlphin to Round 2 so he can play yellowcab.

This needs to happen by noon tomorrow.

GeoffM 08-13-05 03:28 PM

Buckets knocked me out.

Stupid club flush draw :( .

Penguinfan 08-13-05 03:40 PM

TP, completely conflicting schedules between me and Robthedlphin. We are gonna try to get this done early Sunday morning (tomorrow).

If this is a problem then by all means advance him, I have no problem with that.

rchamberlin 08-13-05 08:17 PM

Sorry guys, I had a death in the family. No offense, but this is the first I've thought about the HU Challenge. If I'm out, I'm out w/no hard feelings. Otherwise we can still try to do this.

BrianSwa 08-13-05 08:32 PM

yikes

really sorry to hear that man, I cant speak for TP but im pretty sure you are excused.

robthedlphin 08-13-05 08:59 PM

You still need to set up a time! Let me know ASAP. Anytime before noon--then yellowcab can play the winner after that

Talking Poker 08-13-05 10:55 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Of course I/we understand, rchamberlin. Sorry to hear of your loss.

As for the HUC, please try to play robthedlphin tonight or tomorrow morning, and hopefully the winner can play yellowcab immediately after that.

If you are unable to play by noon tomorrow, rchamberlin, hopefully Penguinfan will be able to. If Penguinfan is also unable to play by noon tomorrow, we have no choice but to advance robthedlphin so he cal play yellowcab.

Either way, I hope yellowcab will be ready to go tomorrow sometime after noon.

This is out of my hands now. We'll know how it turns out by noon tomorrow. In order of priority though, by noon tomorrow:
1. robthedlphin plays rchamberlin
2. robthedlphin plays Penguinfan
3. robthedlphin advances to Round 2 by forfeit

After one of those happens, hopefully someone can play yellowcab and we can wrap up Round 2.
