6 max Goodness (Forum Challenge)

I haven't played 6 max on Party in quite some time - just THREE sessions since September, in fact.

After all the recent talk about the fish at Party, plus me being on a nasty MTT slide, I decided to give the $5/10 game a whirl tonight for old time's sake. Man... these players are as bad as ever, aren't they? I finished the session down a bit, but I can tell this is still a goldmine.

I have to say though, I really love the pace of this game, especially when I'm multitabling (I only played 2 tables tonight).

So I was thinking... I should do some sort of experiment with this. Maybe I should pound this game for a set time or certain number of hands and see how I do. Better yet - maybe a friendly forum challenge for the likes of pshabi (my little protege) and anyone else interested in playing. I "usually" play 10/20 and 15/30 now (not that I've played many cash games in the past few months at all), but I have no problem dropping back to 5/10 for a little bankroll rebuilding, and especially if we can make some sort of friendly competition out of it.

What do you this, pshabi (and anyone else)? Maybe we could each log 5000 hands (or whatever number we decide on) and see who wins the most (or loses the least!)....

We could put 50 bucks (a whopping 5 BBs) on it to make things more interesting. Or we could just do it for fun. It matters not to me.

If no one is interested, no worries - I'll finish up that 100 Heads Up Matches thing I started months ago and then forgot about 70some matches into it... I just feel like I need to focus on something to get me playing more again.

MAYHEM45 01-29-06 02:06 AM

I am also playing 5-10 6 max. I'm down for the challenge, even though I know I am a huge underdog here. How about we start Feb 1st, play 5000 hands from then on and see who is the best from that? I am sucking, but it will be nice to know I can come to you guys with some burning questions.

JDMcNugent7 01-29-06 02:13 AM

I really want to learn how to play Limit 5/10 and up is a horrible place to start. But I'll try to read up on Limit, play some lower stuff and get feedback from u guys, and maybe i could Try and get in on this challenge. Either way im going to learn limit.

PShabi 01-29-06 09:55 AM

I'm down for whatever. Are we looking for a mano y mano contest, or is there some way to format it for a group?

Talking Poker 01-29-06 12:17 PM

I'd recommend searching this forum, if you are interested in 6 max. There is actually better content in here that I have seen in any poker book, quite frankly. Search on "6 max" maybe or "shorthanded" - I'm not sure. I know shabi has posted a number of HHs that have generated good discussion.

Talking Poker 01-29-06 12:20 PM

Either way. If Mayhem wants in, he's in.

The more people we can convert to this goldmine, the happier everyone will be. Not to mention all the future 6 max discussion it could generate...

BTW - how funn will it be when I'm DOWN after 5000 hands? :o That could certainly happen, of course, but I'm targetting a $1500 profit.

PShabi 01-29-06 12:25 PM

Okay, my hands started right after I made the first post btw!!!!;) I got a nice little head start this morning!!!!!! Still getting it, actually.

MAYHEM45 01-29-06 12:33 PM

So how are we working this then? any 5-10 hand in our PT after our post are counted?

JDMcNugent7 01-29-06 12:34 PM

my Limit adventue is starting today. could be a little scary.

Talking Poker 01-29-06 12:42 PM

Yeah, no way dude. PT screenshots filtered from 2/1 (as Mayhem suggested) on... Your head start = practice!

PShabi 01-29-06 12:47 PM

Winking and rolling eyes doesn't mean what it used to?;) ;)  :D :D :D

Talking Poker 01-29-06 01:03 PM

   :D

Heh.

I'm willing to pony up a little side action for this. How about you guys? $20? $50? $100?

Right now, it looks like we have the following:
TP
pshabi
Mayhem
JD

Anyone else? Let's get this squared away by Tuesday and we'll kick off at midnight on Wednesday.

And for the record, this is $5/10 6 max LIMIT Hold Em. Not just any $5/10 game.

Boobie Lover 01-29-06 01:24 PM

Chalk me up as a maybe.

JDMcNugent7 01-29-06 01:27 PM

Don't count me in as a for sure just yet - I'm still attempting to find out just how bad i suck at Limit.

JDMcNugent7 01-29-06 05:20 PM

first day went well , I won at 2/4, 3/6, and then won some at 5/10 - so i might be able to join in.
It is very frustrating to me so far tho - but i really want to learn how to get better at it.

Talking Poker 01-29-06 05:26 PM

I'm thinking 5000 hands under your belt will do the body good.

And Boobie - you should play too. This is your game, right? Or do you play full ring?

I don't care if we don't put an entry fee on this... just thought it would be more fun. I'm looking forward t oseeing the daily PT screenshots.

Boobie Lover 01-29-06 06:33 PM

My last venture into 5/10 6 max I got kicked in the junk pretty severely. I've went back to full ring for a while. I might return though.

Plus, I have to transfer some money into Firepay to get into Party. If variance kicks my ass again, it might be a while before I can get money into Party.

JDMcNugent7 01-29-06 11:56 PM

Just had a real good run 4 tabling 5/10... U can count me in for sure - so much easier to multi table than NL.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 12:07 AM

Ok, so let's get this is writing:

Beginning on February 1st at midnight, we are going to be playing 5000 hands of $5/$10 6 max Limit Hold'Em at Party (or wherever, I guess). Unless someone objects, I say we each pony up a friendly but still significant $50 (that's 5 BBs - I will do more if you all want to). Whoever makes the most money over his 5000 hands (all of 5/10 6 max) is the winner and gets $50 from each of the other contestants.

Sounds good to me. We'll use Poker Tracker screenshots to post our results. It would be fun to keep a scoreboard, but noting matters until hand #5000.

Sounds good?

Semi-Confirmed List (I want to make sure the $50 is cool with everyone):
TP
JD
pshabi
Mayhem

Boobie - Are you guys in? How about the bdawg? You wanna play? Anyone else?

If you guys don't like the $50, speak up. I'll do it for $100 or I'd do it for $0. Doesn't matter to me.

MAYHEM45 01-30-06 12:11 AM

50 sent, lets do this thang.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 12:16 AM

Got it.

And good idea. Anyone who is "in," send your $50 to my TalkingPoker account on Stars.

Let's still hold off on starting until the 1st though, in case anyone else wants to join us. I'll Stick this bad boy.

redbank09 01-30-06 12:17 AM

im in, im goona go sell my house in the morning to cover the loses im going to take, j/k. i cant afford those limits but you gave me a good idea. im new to cash games so i think im going to play 5,000 hands at each level up to a dollar and keep hh so i can improve and maybe win some real cash like u guys. TP does that sound like a good idea to you.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 12:19 AM

Do you use ? If not, you should. That's the best way to keep records and track your play.... not to mention to find leaks in your game. ESPECIALLY for limit play.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 12:20 AM

Hey... one more rule I just though of...

If, after 5000 hands, anyone is DOWN money, they get their $50 back. No need to add insult to injury! I want to keep this friendly.

badblood44 01-30-06 11:52 AM

Intriguing....

Some questions:

1. Any deadlines on when you'd need to complete 5000 hands?
2. Any "surrender" if for instance after 2500 hands you're down more than you're comfortable with and wish to quit? (I know, loser-ish question right there. Let's just say I'm asking on the behalf of others :)

It's funny, but I was just thinking about a foray into limit hold 'em again. I have the bankroll for 5/10 and was thinking I just might give it a try. This could be, as Nigel Tufnel likes to say, that "push over the cliff" that gets me to do it.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 12:05 PM

Cool. We'd love to have you play. As for your questions:

1. I suppose we need a deadline. I think one month is reasonable, right? We'll make this a February contest.

2. I also like the surrender idea. If you surrender, you won't have to keep playing/losing, but you won't get your $50 back. To get your $50 back, you'd need to actually log the 5000 hands and still be in the red.

Or I suppose we could give you half back, or something like that. I'll leave that up to you guys.

PShabi 01-30-06 12:12 PM

Personally, I don't think we should give any money back. But, if we do, it should be after 5k hands only. No half refunds.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 12:16 PM

Done. First one to speak up gets to set the rules!

So that's that. You can surrender (drop out of the competition), but you won't get your $50 back.

JDMcNugent7 01-30-06 12:51 PM

Pokertracker doesn't have dates on when u won what money does it ?
So how are we going to know if people won the $ just during Febuary or not ?

Talking Poker 01-30-06 01:13 PM

You can filter it, starting on 2/1 on the preferences tab.

I guess by looking at the screenshot, we won't KNOW that no one is cheating, but hopefully no one will. I don't think any of us who are entered would.

And if people post daily updates, we'll be able to track it better too...

PShabi 01-30-06 01:34 PM

If you print the "entire" screenshot, it will say "filtered from 02/01/06" at the top of the shot.

Not that people can't photoshop it, but I don't think anyone would do that.

Also, is it your first 5k hands? I play 10k+/month. Can we pick our best 5k stretch, as long as they're consecutive and not sessions from the 1st, the 5th, the 12th, and the 18th?

I say first 5k played should be the rule. Just pointing out some potential questions.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 01:51 PM

First 5k, for sure. Every hand. No pulling out bad ones, etc...

badblood44 01-30-06 08:33 PM

At the risk of being and sounding lame, I'll probably do this, but on an informal basis. I'm pretty sure I'll have a hard time making the 5k hand requirement in February. My kids have stuff to do almost each night of the week and the wife is making a play for my time as well.

So count me as an alternate who will do what he can, mainly for fun and to see how his limit game has deteriorated over the years. I would estimate that I can get 2k hands in.

Sorry to disappoint. :(

Boobie Lover 01-30-06 09:06 PM

I'll sadly have to skip this challenge. Good luck to all that are going to do this.

PShabi 01-30-06 09:22 PM

I'm gonig to kill myself when JD wins this challenge by the way.

Seriously.

JDMcNugent7 01-30-06 10:25 PM

I was honestly just about to write how I was thinking about skipping this little competition because I just played 3/6 NL for the first time since my 3 days of 5/10 and just have a much easier - and Much more profitable time playing NL.

BUT - seeing that if if i win u might kill urself- i guess ill have to play. :D lol j/k

but i guess ill be in- i WONT win tho. GUARENTEED - but ill put 5k hands in - and see if i can become a winning player in this frustrating Limit game.
I'm planning on getting alot of advice from u pros.

Talking Poker 01-30-06 10:35 PM

So far, based on the transfers I have received, only Mayhem and I are in.

Ahem. Let's go boys. $50 to TalkingPoker.

As for those who have declined, no worries. It's just for fun anyway... (well, fun plus 50 bucks).

Edit: It's been a LONG time since I've played 5000 hands in a month. PArt of my reason for setting this up was to make myself grind out some hands.

PShabi 01-30-06 10:52 PM

Waiting on a full tilt cashout to hit neteller.

JDMcNugent7 01-31-06 11:07 AM

sending the $50 right now.

PShabi 01-31-06 11:27 AM

If I don't get my cashout in time, I hope you guys will let me enter and pay a day or two late.

Talking Poker 01-31-06 11:32 AM

I will spot you, yes.

MAYHEM45 01-31-06 11:33 AM

I dont know, can we trust this guy TP?

EDIT: Ok dude, be careful.:D

PShabi 01-31-06 06:35 PM

$50 sent to TP.

Talking Poker 01-31-06 09:40 PM

Confirmed (received $50s):
Me
JD
Mayhem
pshabi

Anyone else? Last chance - we start at midnight tonight.

JDMcNugent7 01-31-06 09:43 PM

Just to be sure - this is Not a race - Correct?

It's just whoever wins the most $$$, their first 5k hands in feb. with a deadline being the end of the month - Right ?

Talking Poker 01-31-06 09:47 PM

Correctamundo.

And I suppose if someone can't get the 5000 hands in, we'll still take their total for however many hands they DID get in. Assuming they are winning, not playing the fulll 5000 hands will only be hurting themselves.

And like I said before, if you finish negative but still get all 5000 hands in, you get your $50 back. The winner only collects from players who made money.

PShabi 01-31-06 11:21 PM

I already got in 450 today, mostly 3-tabling. Up $350 and about to start another session. I'll probably just play through and start the contest on the fly.

Over the next 40 minutes or so, I plan on building that $350 up to about 5 or 6 hundred. Once midnight strikes, I'll promptly begin dumping chips all over the place. If you want some, come and get it.:D

PShabi 02-01-06 12:00 AM

Fuck it

It's 11:57 and I actually fulfilled the first part of my prophecy, up $495. I really don't wanna make an ass out of myself and fulfill the rest so I'ma make like Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue.

I may start this contest tomorrow as a pre-game to the forum tourney. Maybe play during as well.

Talking Poker 02-01-06 12:03 AM

Good plan. I was gonna play tonight, but I'm gonna focus on this rebuy instead.

PShabi 02-01-06 11:36 PM

Waiting to post

At 3-tables. Officially starting the contest.
