Back in 2006, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson announced to the world that he was going to attempt to win $10,000 playing online poker despite starting with a bankroll that contained no money at all. Nothing.

Many people thought Ferguson had gone mad, some said it was impossible but Ferguson was adamant he could complete the challenge, saying it would be a great exercise in poker bankroll management.

Having not invested any money to begin with Ferguson was forced to play freeroll tournaments, often battling it out with 900 other players in order to win between $2 and $5. A couple of weeks into the challenge Ferguson managed cash in one of the freeroll winning $2 and he took a shot at a $0.05/$0.10 no-limit Hold'em game but lost his new bankroll when he was all-in pre-flop with Ace-Queen against a pair of tens.

This forced him to start playing freeroll tournaments again and it took several months to stabilise his bankroll around $6.50. But then he had a major breakthrough in November 2007 when he came second in a $1 multi-table tournament, good enough for $104. Even with this substantial win, it took Ferguson, the 2000 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion, a further nine months to reach his $10,000 goal.

The key to Ferguson's success was his disciplined bankroll management rules. It is difficult to follow any bankroll management rules when your bankroll is less than $50 but once you reach that amount you can start to copy Ferguson's method and turn your $50 into any figure you dream of.

You should never risk more than five per cent of your bankroll at the cash table and in a sit 'n' go and no more than two per cent of your overall bankroll for multi-table tournaments. If rebuys are your thing, then only put 0.5 per cent of your bankroll at risk in any one tournament, this gives you a couple of rebuys and the add-on.

If you are playing pot or no-limit games then you should leave the table as soon as the blinds reach you if what you have on the table represents ten per cent or more of your bankroll. This will prevent you from gambling with a very deep stack and allow you to bank some of your profits.

It will take time and patience but anyone can build up a substantial bankroll by being disciplined.
